Fine dark body; thin yet sticky light tan head. Gentle spicy, citric scents. American IPA taste with an underlying black malt backbone. Medium-heavy body; carbonation tickling the palate.
A fair black IPA, nicely balanced but not exceptional in any way, shape, fashion or form. The body color is excellent yet the head is weak and wispy; the odor comes across fairly subdued, and the body is just okay. The flavor brings things up a notch yet doesn't stand out in any particular fashion. Good yet unassuming...

This black IPA sports a medium, slightly pebbly tan head on a black, effervescent body with ruby highlights; head retention is modest and lacing is good, consisting of thick, rotten bands. The medium-large nose is a tasty blend of cannabis and spicy/sweet and rose-like florals over more subtle, very bright grapefruit, the slightest hints of cocoa, and deceptively slight alcohol overtones. The dark malt character is barely perceptible. Up front, the palate is a medium-bitter, slightly grassy blend of undifferentiated dark malt and citrus. Mid-palate, a bit of nutty malt character emerges and the hops become a bit more grassy and show a bit of pineapple and the cannabis-like florals from the nose. Perceived bitterness stays about medium. The finish is a moderate hit of grassy coffee, and is somewhat astringent; the linger is a modest grassy coffee/pine bitterness that lasts for awhile. Mouthfeel is moderately astringent and a bit thin for the medium body, but style-appropriate; the texture is medium-creamy and modestly peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (growler)

Pours black with a creamy frothy tan foam head. Smells like figs, dark fruits, dried fruits, dark berries, orange citrus, grapefruit, some tropical stone fruits, pineapple, papaya, peach, mango, toasted nutty graham crackery malts, creamy vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, with fresh resinous floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like figs, dark fruits, dried fruits, dark berries, orange citrus, grapefruit, some tropical and stone fruits, pineapple, papaya, peach, mango, toasted nutty graham crackery malts, vanilla, dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, with bitter resinous floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice black IPA.

Poured from a 16oz bottle with a bottled on date of 1/31/17; into a tumbler.
Appearance- very dark, even for a black IPA; thin mocha head that fades quickly; lacing is quiet.
Smell - a sweetness similar to black licorice, along with some pine hops.
Taste - sweet molasses, pine and floral hops and a nice touch of roasted coffee!
Feel - big for a black IPA, similar to an imperial stout, but the sweetness and bitterness is imperial IPA!
Overall - I dig it! The nose leaves a lot to be desired, but every other aspect is fantastic!

Pours near black with a modest beige head. Good steaks of lace on the glass.
If I were blindfolded, I would think this is a regular IPA as there are no notable darker malt aromas. I do get pale malt sweetness along with the typical floral to peppery hop nose.
There are some dark chocolate flavors on the initial sip. It reminds me a bit like burnt toast. The bitterness is ever present but on the mild side. The aftertaste is reminiscent of black coffee. Body leans thin while the carbonation leans high.

It's a not-quite-but almost-black with about a finger of slightly foamy tan head. The head settles down to thin layer over the top and leaves some rings and spots of small sticky lacing. The aroma is mild, with hints of pine and roasted malts and maybe a faint whiff of coffee? It's hard for me to pinpoint it but it definitely is there in the background. The taste is much the same. Both are good-very good but neither blow me away. The body is lighter on the palate (in a good way) with a lighter but persistent carbonation tingle. Bottled 1/31/17
