Collaboration with Jester King Brewery

The Parking Lot Grissette is a foeder-aged, tart farmhouse ale brewed in collaboration with our friends at Jester King Brewery. Like so many of our ideas, this rustic beer, dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon, was dreamed up in a parking lot session during a climbing trip with our Texas friends.

Solid amber hued body; one-finger thick, creamy and sculpted head. Spicy, herbal scent; peppery. Tart, lime-like flavor; mild phenolic action; lemons. Medium body; crisp and mildly fizzy; tart.

A fine crisp and tart beer with plenty of citrus tones.

"The Parking Lot Grissette is a foeder-aged, tart farmhouse ale brewed in collaboration with our friends at Jester King Brewery. Like so many of our ideas, this rustic beer, dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon, was dreamed up in a parking lot session during a climbing trip with our Texas friends." Brewed in the style of a Farmhouse Ale, dry hopped with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon, available in 500ml. bottle or on limited draft.

Poured from a 500ml. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of an eggnog-white tone over a moderately hazy copper-amber body with moderate lively carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is moderate and stringy. 4.5

(Smell) Saison yeast nose up front, with a majority spicy and lesser stone fruit character, atop a simple pale and cracker malt body with a gentle sweetness, a moderate tangy acidity with a modest funkiness, and a spicy, citrusy and lemony nose from the two hop additions with a moderate bitterness. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) The flavor largely follows the aroma, with an extraordinary lightness to the body, common in Grissette style beers- yet incredible preservation and presentation of flavor nonetheless. Pale and pilsner malt body, very clean with a light sweetness, a comparatively strong acidity and funk backbone with suggestions of tangy spring fruit juices, and a moderately hopped back end with more lemony and spicy characteristics that lend well to the sour angle of this beer and compliment the saison yeast presence, which is notably more dialed down from the aroma, yet simultaneously more in line with the volume of the flavor. Finishes lightly dry and tangy. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, mildly residual, tangy, acidic and slightly dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a moderately crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Balance is nearly even acidic and tart to sweetness. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 4

(Overall) With nicely balanced Saison ales gaining in popularity stateside, I am enjoying seeing breweries play around with the style, incorporating souring and dry hopping techniques to make for an overall enjoyable culmination of flavors. Much appreciated is the "Grissette" substyle, which calls for a lighter body without a sacrifice in flavor, and the inclusion of lesser recognized, but enjoyable hops to use nonetheless. Despite its' collaboration status limiting a revival of this beer in particular, beers like this are very becoming and I think this would be excellent packaged in sessionable canned formats. Worth a shot. 4

With a new age German attitude, the collaborative efforts of Wicked Weed and Jester King hits the rustic saison style head on. Much more citrusy and melon-like on the hop front gives this saison something succulent but with the same spicy, grassy bitter bite that's familiar to the style's classic taste.

The Partking Lot Grissette pours like fruit juice with its pale and heavily hazy golden orange hues. A creamy ecru froth mounts on top with a heavy scent of citrusy tangerine, blood orange and mandarine orange blossoming with a perfumy array. Bready, fruity and creamy, the early sweetness is laced with fruit juices of the tropical and citrus variety to mask the beer's often grainy upstart.

Bursting with tart and tangy fruit flavor, the middle palate unfolds with all those orange centric tastes and along with aspects of cider, lemon, melon and tropical flavors. Pineapple, mango and apricot apply a juicy coat of flavor before the ale tightens and its sour fruit finish crispens the taste and the hops trend herbal and grassy.

Semidry and remaining juicy with honeydew and orange, the beer's sourness never dominates the hops. Properly hopped, the bitter spice from hops is pleasantly of chive, parsley and lemongrass. Its medium length aftertaste is a return of bright citrus but the earth of cellar funk and dry hay.

Pour is a semi hazy, medium orange hue. Big soft white head with excellent lacing. It has a big typical Belgian yeast aroma similar to many JK brews, strong lemon zest and orange peel notes a little mustiness. Lemon zest, with a little more bursts of citrus pops up in the taste. Slightly tart, not much rustic character going on. Mouthfeel is moderately thin, somewhat acidic.

Bottle dated 1/2016:
The pour gives me a body that is a little murky. It almost looks like some of the NE IPAs that aren't milkshake-like in nature. The head bubbles up nicely before condensing into a nice foam cap (nucleated glass). Sheets of white lacing adorn the opposite side of the glass.

Nose pretty much backs up what the first two things on the bottle's tagline indicate: tart and farmhouse. Hay, musty wood, a white grape and sour apple tartness, and a little grass bitterness. I ended up enjoying just sniffing it for a while.

Initially I thought this beer was a little weird, and I wasn't overly certain I would like it. It opened lightly tart and funky - lemon spritzed granny smith accenting a dry farmhouse beer. But then the beer seemed to enter a watery stage, with the tartness just barely hanging on. I did not like this watery note, but it appears as if cold could have affected my palate. This flavor sensation eventually faded, although the force of flavor in this beer remained up front. The relative lightness on the palate later in the taste did make it quite refreshing - and entice me to grab another sip.

Pours a hazy amber color with off-white head. Funk, tartness, caramel malt, citrus, and some grassy notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with some malt, citrus, and light tartness.
