Notes / Commercial Description:
Persistence is a sour red ale aged in our foeder. One pound per gallon of Montmorency Cherries contributes a leathery accent to this Flanders-inspired ale. Once this beer reaches its peak, we blend the batch to attain the perfect balance of our house sour culture and North American cherries.

Really nice beer. I'm partial to cherry sours, but many can be too sweet or too tart, or just lack enough cherry flavor. This one strikes all the right notes. Beautifully balanced, with bright cherry notes seamlessly integrated in to a somewhat funky, complex, sour background. I just keep going back for another sip. Well done!

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 17.99. Bottled 9/30/16. Served in a Wicked Weed snifter.

Pours a dark, opaque chestnut with a finger and a half cap of sand hued head. The bubbles vanish within a couple minutes, leaving behind a few tiny surface wisps, a broken rail around the edges and no lacing whatsoever.

Smells of tart fruit skins, a pleasant oaky funk, cherry, old wet leather and some sweetish spoiled grains.

The flavors are earthy, funky, fruity and plenty sour. Barrel funk, soured grain, cherry pulp, fruit skins, earth, leather, an almost red wine-like note but surprisingly no alcohol. There is not quite as much cherry as I'd hoped but everything works together.

Dry, medium full feel with subdued carbonation. Dull sour finish with notes of cherry, wet oak and earthy leather.

A solid stab at a Flanders red from Wicked Weed. It's a tad more earthy dry and has less cherry flavor than I'd prefer but this is a well done and dangerously easy drinking brew.

From the side of the front label: "Date Bottled: 9.30.16"

Appearance: The body of the beer has a medium brown color with hazy hues of gold-brown and burnt umber. It is listed as an "American Wild Ale" but on the label it does state that it is a "Flanders-inspired ale." It takes on more of an Old Bruin color than a Flanders Red. Not much of a head; there is a bit of an off-white tobacco stained yellow color head that forms when pouring but it goes away quicker than it pours. While drinking the beer it maintains this flat and lifeless surface, devoid of even carbonation, which is very boring.

Aroma: It has a souring fruit aroma that does have a nice tart cherry quality to it. Lingering in the rafters of the nasal cavity is a bit of peach. There is a bit of a sweaty sheet and old barn aroma that, as bad as it might sound, is hallmark to an appreciable character in this beer. That peach scent makes a second comeback each sniff as the glass is pulled away and it really adds depth to the aroma.

Taste: There is this nice tartness with a bit of cinnamon and brown sugar. There is this light cherry sweetness at the end and a bit of red wine flavor. It is very reminiscent of a cherry pie without being overbearing on sweetness. It is a bit difficult to describe why this beer is so good because it just falls together perfectly like pieces in a puzzle and it would be like describing why something does, what it naturally does.

Mouthfeel: It has a nice tartness that is present on the palate just long enough to give it a pinch and fade away. It feels wet and easy to drink. Low carbonation.

Overall: As a whole I would recommend the beer to anyone who loves Flanders style beers because this really nails it. What it lacks in appearance and mouthfeel it makes up for in flavor. I would drink it again and I would recommend it any day of the week.

Appearance: Pours an auburn color with a frothy head that quickly fades away; a few spots of lacing hang around

Smell: Tart cherry and funk tones; oaky, with a lot of fruit coming through

Taste: Tart cherry tones, at the outset, with the funk arriving early; underneath there is a beguiling sweetness that offsets the wilder tones; the back end brings on the oak, which cuts through the sweetness and emphasizes the drier aspect

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: Wicked Weed knows their way around red colored fruits and this is really quite good; a better mouthfeel would push up the score even further
