Notes / Commercial Description:
Humanity's path out of the Dark Age is one without end. This path carries us away from the mystical to the measurable, from the magical to the mathematical, and is a meticulous tale of progress from madness to method. Yet, we still find wonder in the magic, and extraordinary potential in the mystery. Out of this yearning for the old ways, Dark Age Imperial Stout emerges from the Whisky Barrel, its dark malt complexity and bold, yet balanced, sweetness softened by its mystical evolution in oak.

Tap at Salud NoDa. Your standard black, nice and thick appearing. Thin but frothy layer of tan head. Laces just a bit.

Aroma, roast malt, dark chocolate fudge, some vanilla, oak, bourbon.

Taste, roast malt and bourbon barrel are big and about equal throughout. Roast malt and darker less sweet chocolate. Vanilla and bourbon. Just a little anise and coffee bitterness. It all lingers very nicely.

About full body, a tad warming. Not quite creamy mouthfeel. A nice sipping after dinner or cigar beer for sure.
My favorite dark beer of theirs so far, as good as their Belgian and ipa lines.

Pours a dark almost pitch black with a dark tan head. Great bourbon, and woody oak aroma. Some dark fruits and Roasty malts. Has a medium body but packs a whole boatload of flavor with every sip. Progresses as it warms. Great barrel aged offering!

A thorough blanket of lace is formed by the rich, foamy head. It's small but solid and lasting.

I get a plethora of smells from his beer. Predominantly, I get the expected: cocoa, chalk and vanilla. I also pick up on cinnamon, sugar and milk.

Rich, sweet darker malt start to the taste. Lots of alcohol warmth, almost like an after-dinner drink. I get some fruity sweetness upfront. Chewy body with a diminished carbonation level. Warming from the alcohol level. The aftertaste is darker cocoa.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits.
Solid black color huge frothy tan head that persists. Deep roasty grain and licorice with some smokey earthy woody notes in the nose. Deep sweet brown sugary flavor with big note of anise and licorice. Light chocolate and roast with some earthy spice to counter. Rich sweet vanilla with notes of bourbon and wood round this out quite nicely. Great sipper.

Bottled March 2016, pours with a half finger of cocoa-colored head that sticks around. Dark Age has a distinctive nose, with strong notes of barrel oak but not much bourbon itself, plus chicory, anise, and pine bark--bitter, darkly roasted, and serious. The flavor profile moves a bit closer to something resembling sweetness, like bittersweet chocolate chips, but is still muddled by the aromas. Hugely flavorful, and a canonical example of a Russian imperial, but it goes so hard that it starts to lose me a bit. This is not amateur hour.

Appearance: It has got the look, with a one inch head of tan foam building atop the pitch black liquid; a tangled web of lace hangs on the chalice after each sip

Smell: Roasted and oaky, with Bourbon, vanilla, marshmallow and blackberry

Taste: Roast and chocolate tones forward, with graham cracker, vanilla, marshmallow, blackberry and current elements building; the oak and Bourbon barrel aspect arrive, after the swallow, with the ABV bringing some warmth to the equation; the sweet chocolate returns in the finish

Moutfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation; surprisingly light for the style

Overall: Bottled on 3/22/16 and in its prime; lots going on in this beer that shows that Wicked Weed knows its way around a variety of styles

Excellent balance for a big BBA Imperial Stout. Still a little hot and carbonated after warming to room temperature, but overall another delicious offering from a fantastic brewery.

Bottled on 3/22/16.Pours into a goblet nearly jet black except for some ruddy brown when held up to the light a creamy beige head atop.Bourbon, chocolate, and vanilla stand out in the nose but some ripe apple and fig is there as well,I like the somewhat unripe fruitiness that the aromas bring over the bourbon and chocolate.Bourbon and graham cracker flavors up front on the palate then some drunken fruits come into play, the chocolate although there is not as "big" to me on the palate. It's a fantastic beer....I don't venture to far into Wicked Weed territory because I am not into sour/funk but man when I do I'am rewarded.A helluva beer here.

Bottle shared. Dark pour with an espresso heah. Notes of brewed coffee, dark fruit, coffee, cherries, bourbon. Soft mouthfeel, coffee and bourbon. Nice!

On tap at the brewpub which reports 11.7% ABV and use of 3 malts (including honey malt), rye, honey, brown sugar and dextrose. Two samples, 2 days apart.

Pours are dark and opaque red-brown with a small, very durable head.

WW uses a pre-rinsed BBL to great effect on the aroma, flavor and smooth feel. Nit-picking, I note a bit more burnt flavor in the aftertaste than optimal.

O: very enjoyable; every aspect excels.
