Dark AgeDark Age
Notes: Humanity's path out of the Dark Age is one without end. This path carries us away from the mystical to the measurable, from the magical to the mathematical, and is a meticulous tale of progress from madness to method. Yet, we still find wonder in the magic, and extraordinary potential in the mystery. Out of this yearning for the old ways, Dark Age Imperial Stout emerges from the Whisky Barrel, its dark malt complexity and bold, yet balanced, sweetness softened by its mystical evolution in oak.

This is an attractive barrel-aged imperial stout: a slightly viscous pour results in a giant, slightly pebbly dark khaki head on an effervescent, impenetrably black body that is devoid of highlights except for a slight orange glimmer at its base; head retention is modest and lacing is good, consisting of thick slabs and caverns. The nose is medium-big; it leads with a heady, sweetish blend of bourbon, coconut and light caramel, which leads into deeper chocolate notes, hints of molasses and appreciable alcohol undertones. The palate is neither as sweet nor as light as the nose would suggest; the darker malt tones are more predominate, the flavor being a seamless blend of milk chocolate, dark molasses and bitter toffee, with the caramel from the nose relegated to slight hints, all riding atop a significant undercurrent of booze. The bourbon character is more restrained than on the nose, and is an accent or a highlight rather than playing a starring role. Overall, the flavor is nicely balanced between sweet and bitter. The finish is a nice slug of booze and toffee; the linger is a mildly bitter oaky chocolate/coconut flavor that lasts for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is commensurate with the full body, and is slightly warming; the texture is sticky/creamy and slightly peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (12.7 oz bottle, 59 days after pkg)

Bottle dated 10/17/17 into pint glass. Pours a very dark brown - almost no discernable light once it's in the glass. Thin tan head. Initial impression is dark chocolate, cocoa, oak, bourbon, molasses, and maybe a touch of coffee and dark fruits. Sweet but not cloying. Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. Alcohol is evident but contributes to, rather than detrating from, the overall effect. Smooth, which is pretty amazing considering it's a fresh, high ABV RIS. Finish is sweetish and boozy but sets you up for the next sip. I have a second bottle that I'm tempted to cellar but I'll probably drink fresh just because.

Pours a dark almost pitch black with a dark tan head. Great bourbon, and woody oak aroma. Some dark fruits and Roasty malts. Has a medium body but packs a whole boatload of flavor with every sip. Progresses as it warms. Great barrel aged offering!

A thorough blanket of lace is formed by the rich, foamy head. It's small but solid and lasting.

I get a plethora of smells from his beer. Predominantly, I get the expected: cocoa, chalk and vanilla. I also pick up on cinnamon, sugar and milk.

Rich, sweet darker malt start to the taste. Lots of alcohol warmth, almost like an after-dinner drink. I get some fruity sweetness upfront. Chewy body with a diminished carbonation level. Warming from the alcohol level. The aftertaste is darker cocoa.

Appearance: It has got the look, with a one inch head of tan foam building atop the pitch black liquid; a tangled web of lace hangs on the chalice after each sip

Smell: Roasted and oaky, with Bourbon, vanilla, marshmallow and blackberry

Taste: Roast and chocolate tones forward, with graham cracker, vanilla, marshmallow, blackberry and current elements building; the oak and Bourbon barrel aspect arrive, after the swallow, with the ABV bringing some warmth to the equation; the sweet chocolate returns in the finish

Moutfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation; surprisingly light for the style

Overall: Bottled on 3/22/16 and in its prime; lots going on in this beer that shows that Wicked Weed knows its way around a variety of styles

Bottle from Colonial Spirits.
Solid black color huge frothy tan head that persists. Deep roasty grain and licorice with some smokey earthy woody notes in the nose. Deep sweet brown sugary flavor with big note of anise and licorice. Light chocolate and roast with some earthy spice to counter. Rich sweet vanilla with notes of bourbon and wood round this out quite nicely. Great sipper.

Excellent balance for a big BBA Imperial Stout. Still a little hot and carbonated after warming to room temperature, but overall another delicious offering from a fantastic brewery.

Bottled March 2016, pours with a half finger of cocoa-colored head that sticks around. Dark Age has a distinctive nose, with strong notes of barrel oak but not much bourbon itself, plus chicory, anise, and pine bark--bitter, darkly roasted, and serious. The flavor profile moves a bit closer to something resembling sweetness, like bittersweet chocolate chips, but is still muddled by the aromas. Hugely flavorful, and a canonical example of a Russian imperial, but it goes so hard that it starts to lose me a bit. This is not amateur hour.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a tulip glass. Bottle courtesy of @MunsonERoy as an extra:

Appearance: pours super dark brown, nearly black in color, with a sudsy mocha-colored head. Body is totally opaque with no visibility. Head dissipates after a few minutes, leaving a decently thick foam ring.

Aroma: loads of complexity and decadence here. Heavy on the bourbon, but not hot or boozy. Carries lots of dark chocolate, vanilla, and other stout-y flavors. Very inviting and rich.

Taste: for a stout I've never heard much about, this is fantastic. Super balanced and deep in its flavor, it packs loads of dark chocolate fudginess, lots of barrel without being boozy or hot, and lots of nice secondary flavors, like roast, vanilla, and oak.

Feel: full-bodied, very, very smooth, and without any heat at all, it drinks more like a 9% stout than a 12%.

Overall: this is an amazing and unheralded stout.

Pours a dark black with a nice coffee head. Has a great bourbon smell. Great bourbon and chocolate smell. Taste just like it smells with a certain hint of sweetness. Feel is pretty good maybe a touch too thin. Overall a great beer. Would get again.

Deep brown in color with no head and a touch of lacing.

Nose is bourbon, coffee, vanilla, oak, and a bit of raspberry.

Taste is bourbon, black coffee, sweet malt, and a oaky finish.

Mouthful is medium and smooth but not cloying or silky. Carbonation is low to medium. Finish is a tad warming and lingers.

A super solid barrel aged stout. Nose and taste are on point. Mouthful is not lacking but different. Very impressed with this beer especially given the quantity and that WW is known for their sours.

I loved this beer. Black as night with a cocoa head that left sheets of lacing. The smell is a wee heavy on the bourbon but still acceptable. There is also chocolate, oak, vanilla and cherry notes. The taste is a lot of bourbon and chocolate with a cherry vanilla finish. There is a decent amount of bourbon flavor but it is so good. Fantastic beer.

Pours black from the bottle. Nice heavy bourbon nose. The nose alludes to the boozey forward notes in the body with a fudge-y chocolate flavor and a more viscous mouthfeel. Finishes quite warm as well. Almost needs to tone down the booze a bit. Should cellar really well.

L: Poured into a Cycle 2016 Weekday snifter. Small 1/4" head was born then moderately faded away to a bit of lacing around the rim of the beer surface. Beer is dirty motor oil black in color. Touch of lacing stuck to glass when drinking but quickly dissipated....

S: strong dark chocolate, booze, bourbon and some oak....

T: sweet malt and vanilla up front. Bourbon, hops, burnt molasses and tobacco towards the back....

F: medium high to high thickness. Some alcohol burn, and a touch of dryness from the hops.
