Freak Of NatureFreak Of Nature
Notes: The Freak of Nature is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of the big West Coast hops gives this beer its citrusy, weedy nose and big, dank flavor. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch, which is over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In keeping with the classic style of the West Coast double, sugar plays a large part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter, we welcome you to the Freak Show.

A 32 oz growler given to me as a birthday gift from brewdude1982's recent trip to Asheville

A - clear orangish yellow with a huge, dense, foamy, pure-white head that has great retention

S - huge juicy citrus notes, ruby red grapefruit and orange

T - faint dark bread malt character, mild rind-like bitterness, huge citrus notes of grapefruit and maybe some pineapple, a mild sweetness towards the finish, and some warming alcohol in the finish, lingering bitterness

M - medium bodied, warming alcohol, well carbonated

This is a hugely hopped, intensely citrusy DIPA. Outside of some of my groups' homebrews, I'm not sure I've tasted anything this intensely citrusy. The malt is there but it doesn't have the backbone to stand up to the immense hop character. There is also a strong bitterness that comes along and tries to lend depth. Ultimately, this is a good DIPA. It has decent flavor and I could drink a few of these without getting bored. I would like to see a bit more balance and depth, but even as it stands, it is worth a try.

Nice clear golden look. Smell is a little dank, citrus and piney. Taste is pretty damn good. It's hoppy with a little sweetness and bitterness that lingers. The citrus sweetness and pine come thru more as it warms. This is a classic west coast IPA that is really good. Goes down easy when listening to Dio - Holy Diver!

Hits all the high points. Comes out of the gates with strong hop mixture, crisp, clean, but bold. The newest on my list of top IPAs joining Elysian Space Dust, Scofflaw Basement and Jai Lai. Careful with the 8.5 ABV.

Can to snifter.

Equal blend of citrus/piney hops upfront and the pine takes over late.

Drinks easy. Very good and steady carbonation.

Reminds me of Sierra Nevada torpedo.

From a 12oz can dated "Drink By" 7/9/22, "PKG On" 4/25/22 into a pint glass.

Pours a golden orange with about a finger and a half of white head. Great retention and lacing.

Smells are faint on the crack of the can but picking up pine, flowers, citrus and wet earth.

Taste is powerful. Strong bitter pine and dank earth. Took a couple sips for the palate to adjust. Some mellowing on warming. Bit of alcohol in the taste.

Sticky mouthfeel. Strong bitter aftertaste. Low carbonation.

This hits all the notes for a WCIPA. Winner.

Pours clear golden amber with a white head.

In the nose is resinous pine grapefruit and floral notes.

Resinous pine, sticky tropical fruit (slight mango hit) with bitter grapefruit. Finishes dry.

12oz can served in a footed pilsner glass. Canned on 030122, best by 051522. Sent to me by @superspak in NBS BIF #15.

Surprisingly, the can is a gusher. I lost less than an ounce, but made a mess with what I did spill. End result is a hazy dark gold with a huge head, collapsing fairly slowly into thick rocky peaks. Smell is piney / grapefruity hops, a little hay, some grain husk.

Taste is lemon / grapefruit pith / zest / juice. Light honeysuckle sweetness. Resinous bitterness builds. Kind of an interesting softness in the bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium to light, smooth, clean. Overall, nice beer!

4/26/22 at the brewery in Asheville, NC.

Lemony pine and slight tropical fruit and peach aroma.

Big, sweet, and piney in the mouth. Full mouth feel, soft. I love the balance of the pine, grapefruit, and slight peach flavors. Just the right amount of bite on the tongue.

Very good lot of flavor and at 8.5 it's got plenty of punch to it, readily available in NC definitely a must try also available as singles which is a plus.

16 ounce can into IPA glass, canned on 06/26/2021, best before 9/9/2021. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 3 finger dense and fluffy off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing on the glass with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, biscuit, light caramel/toast, and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation and medium-plus body; balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing drying from lingering resins after the finish, with no astringency. Very smooth, and a bit crisp on finishing. Mildly warming 8.5%. Definitely classic west coast style taste as the hops are Centennial, Chinook, Columbus in the boil. Amarillo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe dry hops put in a bit of tropical notes, but it is still a big C forward profile. The body is a bit bigger than other DIPAs in this category, but I would still get it again. I would say the vibrancy and dankness of the hops is very similar to Stone Ruination but there is more balance to the malt body. Not a bad thing, just a different thing.

This was an interesting DIPA...

Super bitter, light on the the ABV (or at least how it feels to me) and overall a pretty darn good beer. I will mention the super bitterness is a bit to much for me, and the mouthfeel has a strong astringent property, but overall, I did enjoy it.

16 ounce can poured into a tulip.
Canned 8/5/21

L: Amber and mostly clear (chill haze), two finger cream-white head, some lace, visible carbonation.
S: Piney, resinous, citrus peel, a bit of tropical juice, biscuit/bready malt.
T: Like the nose mostly resinous, some spice, minimal sweet malt flavor, decent hop bitterness, mild alcohol, clean bitter finish.
F: Medium weight, high carbonation, soft with crisp edges.
O: Very good west coast style Imperial, correct balance, not overly bitter, decent flavor, no complaints.

Just a bit of haze on the amber body. White head is relatively small with good laving. Dank, resinous aroma paired with citrus. Big hoppy taste with an unusual bitter footprint. The bitterness is focused at first then fades on the back of the palate only to return full force in the aftertaste. In between, there is enough malt sweetness to add balance. Dry, medium-to-full bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel.
