Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Freak of Nature is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of the big West Coast hops gives this beer its citrusy, weedy nose and big, dank flavor. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch, which is over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In keeping with the classic style of the West Coast double, sugar plays a large part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter, we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Happy visit from the Owner/brewer to New England; 12 ounce pour on tap at the Independent in Somerville Massachusetts. This ale is a shining example of the craft and complexity being built on the many varieties of the noble hop flower. The eyes perceive deep golden amber body and creamy head as the nose greets the rich hop bouquet. The first slip brings on waves of hop notes, so many notes that they literally dance on the tongue: tropical notes of many fruits, barnyard notes, this is taking "dank" to a new level, and the malt backbone provides a perfect bass-line for this hop performance. Alcohol is present, and woven neatly into the fabric of the beer, and the finish is surprisingly clean, leaving my mouth watering and wanting more. An impressive performance by WW all around!

Note: this beer was tasted head to head with Stone Enjoy By 4/20/16 and the WW was the clear victor in this pairing. Either the Stone is over-rated or the WW reviews are not giving justice to this fine brew.

Bottle.

A: Big, danky, citrusy hoppy aroma with a very light malt presence.

A: yellow-orange color, totally clear with a frothy white head that has moderate carbonation. There is light lacing in the glass.

T: Crisp, danky, citrusy hoppy flavor, light malt presence, with a light bitterness on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, with no noticeable alcoholic warmth.

O: Pretty tasty; some DIPAs have almost overripe hop flavor, but this beer is crisp with great dank, citrusy flavor (thanks to the massive dry-hopping). The huge hop aroma and flavor, along with light bitterness makes this beer quite enjoyable to drink.

Nabbed from the brewery. First Wicked Weed beer. Poured into a snifter.

Look is a bright copper brew, slight haze, thick head a leaves good lacing.

Smell is full of hops, and nature - fruits, tropical, pineapple. Dank.

Taste is complex with all these tropical flavors. Name fits. Love it.

Medium bodied brew. Well balanced. A litter bitterness and a easy finish.

Overall it's great. A well balanced DIPA that allows the citrus and hops to shine. Lots of different earthy flavors. Wish I had more.

Way too sticky and weedy. A hop bomb but not in a good way.

L: Golden orange that is mostly clear with a slight haze. Very light white head with very little retention, but leaves pockets of film and so-so lacing.

S: A blast of juicy hops and a mess load of pineapple. Very light and tropical.

T: Much more hop dominate with a small taste of citrus before a good amount of bitterness kicks. The finish is dominated by pine that leaves a very crisp finish.

F: Very dry, medium to light on the body. Medium carbonation that really helps the overall experience.

O: The name is very fitting with a great balance between taste and smell of a wide variety of nature themes. The hops dominate to make for a great DIPA base. Very clean and refreshing that fits so well with the weather warming.

Appearance: pours a hazy yellowish orange color with a 2" head that lasts a while. Nice lace paints the glass.

Smell: loads of citrus and dank hop bitterness.

Taste: caramel, grapefruit, orange, pine, a hint of mango, and a hearty earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout with dry finish. Long lasting citrus and earthy tones stick to the tongue for while.

Overall: a delicious DIPA with a serious hop presence that keeps the tastebuds happy.
