Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Freak of Nature is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of the big West Coast hops gives this beer its citrusy, weedy nose and big, dank flavor. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch, which is over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In keeping with the classic style of the West Coast double, sugar plays a large part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter, we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Flowery. Pine, grapefruit, dank, and resinous. A touch of sweetness in the mid palate. Lower carb, drinkable. Very dry on the finish. It's pretty good. I think I was expecting a bit more, but it's still worth trying.

Moderately foamy head. Settles quickly but leaves spots of lace on the way. Dark gold color. Mild haze.

Prickly evergreen nose with a solid grapefruit presence. Light malt.

Highly carbonated, which enhances the strong spicy hop bite--black pepper like. Good malt start but it gets completely dominated by the grapefruit rind tasting finish. Long aftertaste as one would expect.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a golden yellow with a medium sized white head. The aroma is hop driven. An outstanding beer.

Pale golden orange with khaki foam
Smell of crisp grapefruit, apricot, orange, lemon zest, bread
Taste is grapefruit cut with breadiness. Very hoppy, a little piney
Sharp aggressive carbonation
The bitterness isn't fully balanced but it's a very complex hop-forward DIPA

Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellowy orange. Light foam. Aroma is like gin. Pine and juniper and spruce. God damn that is piney. Smells better than Pernicious, though. Flavor attempts to balance out the gin-like hoppiness with a violent candied sweetness (found said sweetness in Pernicious). Pine needles and botanical hops meet rock candy and sugar water. I somehow enjoy this combination to a certain extent. Underlying sugar-drizzled fruit hops. Medium bodied with a long lick of bitter and some booze. Wicked Weed seems to have a very unique take on hoppy beers. They near on "sweetness overload" for me but I'm sorta digging this one.
