Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Freak of Nature is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of the big West Coast hops gives this beer its citrusy, weedy nose and big, dank flavor. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch, which is over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In keeping with the classic style of the West Coast double, sugar plays a large part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter, we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Pours a translucent deep golden with medium head. The smell is tropical and citrusy hops with just the right amount of malt. Tastes of pineapple, lemon zest, tropical fruits. Delicious! Another winner from one of my new favorite breweries!

Had a pint at the brewpub today for $5.50.

Beer was served golden orange with a nice white head that left lacing behind.

Nose is dank hops forward.

Taste was dank as well, citrus and pine play nice with the malt base.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, surprisingly light for this big of beer.

Overall an awesome beer that I am very happy to have tried!

Was looking forward to trying this one.

The beer pours a golden amber color, with good head retention and lacing, This beer certainly looks attractive enough. The nose is pretty decent as well, as I get some light citrus, a hint of tropical fruit, and a considerable onion aroma (all of which is OK in my book). The aroma profile struck me as a bit lean (minimal sweetness), something that was confirmed on the palate. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, and the beer was very dry and bitter on the finish. However, there is considerable heat from the noticeable alcohol on the finish, and it really mars this beer's drinkability (IMO). If anything, the noticeable alcoholic bite became more and more pronounced as I went along, and I finally just gave up and dumped the rest (about a 4th of the bottle). I'm fairly certain the bottle I had was pretty fresh, so I honestly don't know what the problem was.

At least for me, I did not find this to be an enjoyable DIPA (I much preferred the regular pernicious).

On draft. Pours smoothly with little head. Golden semi clear. Doesn't smell very hoppy. Starts off gently and fiishes with strong hoppy flavor.
