The color is a pretty thick and dark burnt orange, though with a certain brightness. A creamy cap of orange-tinted head forms and rests on top for a pretty good duration of the session. Lacing is left on the glass in heavy spotting and moderate patching.
Hellfish offers up a good combination of hop-forwardness and malt balance. Light alcoholic notes sneak in without being too hard in the smell, while sneaking in a little more strongly underneath in the flavor. The nose brings out a bright citrus first with notes of raw, rind-like, and slightly woody (green) pith. In the flavor, crystal malts also present in the aroma add a balancing sweetness, with some toasty breads beside. A touch of pine comes in beneath the raw, earthier bitterness.
There's a lightness on the tongue despite the medium body and high alcohol. Malt adds some heft while hops add the dryness and nearly a sort of acidity. Crispness and smoothness both roll on the palate in moderation.
