Brewed by:
Laughing Sun Brewing Co.
North Dakota, United States

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Belgian Golden Strong Ale takes it name from the light pear flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast esters and the sinister nature of these styles of ales. Easy drinking from the Pilsener malt profile, this refreshing ale packs a punch with the additions of raw sugar to the boil kettle. A light hop flavor balances the alcohol, and melds perfectly with the pear flavors.

On tap at the brewery. This was poured into a tulip which I ended up buying one as well.
The appearance was a soft hazy pale orange to glossy white color with a bar pour's kind of head that capped and slid into the beer itself.
The smell had some citrus invading into the "pear"-like quality the brewery said is there. Light Belgian spices grace in and around the aroma.
The taste gently wove the sweetness in with the spice to help create a subtle bready yet nice Belgian-esque sort of back-of-the-throat feel over my tongue.
The mouthfeel was about light bodied with a decent sessionably sweet feel roaming over my tongue. Spices hit nicely but don't distract from actual drinking compared to sipping. ABV felt good for what it was.
Overall, I'd say this was a nice Belgian Strong pale ale. I'd have this again.

Nice, cloudy pale straw color with a decent head. Smells yeasty and spicy with faint hints of pear. Taste is smooth for the ABV, with a pleasant malt and Belgian yeast flavor. The pear from the name shows up in the finish with a surprisingly refined and bright taste. Overall a good take on the style with a nice twist.

Had this at the brewery. Looked great in the glass. Poured a hazy, yellow/gold w a thin white head. Not much aroma. A little citrus, but not much. Yeast esters, good medium to full mouthfeel but very little in the realm of pear. Decent lacing. Was underwhelmed based on some previous reviews.

A complex classic, this beer is a surprisingly impressive achievement from a moderately sized town in North Dakota, of all places. While the ESB is probably the best overall beer (and a great session ale), this Belgian style ale is very satisfying indeed. Good acidity; a cloudy green color. Compares well to some of the most famous Belgian style lambics and farmhouse ales.
