Blue Moon White IPABlue Moon White IPA
Notes: A crisp, refreshing White IPA crafted with four varieties of hops, wheat, coriander, and a hint of orange peel.

For our unfiltered White IPA, we complimented the citrus hop character with wheat and a hint of orange peel. Then we dry-hopped it with Cascade, Citra, and Huell Melon hops for a bright hop aroma that creates a balanced IPA.

Review is from February 2, 2017.

Pours a familiar golden yellow color, but with a significant amount of haze, looks like they not only used oats and wheat, but also kept it unfiltered. Perhaps more taste will come of this turbid looking beer with 1/2" white head. The aroma didn't exactly pop hard for the Citra (or Huell Melon) hop. It was more citrus rind, more evocative of the Cascade hop moreso than Citra.

Anyways, the taste definitely was more bitter than regular blue moon, so it seems like the Simcoe is doing its thing beyond the Cascade bitterness. Even with the wheat and oat contribution to the body, it just seemed like it was an amped up bitterness kind of blue moon wit without doing much to push the flavor from the hops along. Like they went 97% bittering hops and sprinkled some Huell Melon and Citra along to simply mention they used those hops as a marketing angle. Didn't have any off flavors or reason to hate the beer, but its just like a triple bitterness Blue Moon OG beer at the end of the day.

I drank it at a bbq and just grabbed a bottle from the cooler, not sure if it was old. At first I thought it was a regular blue moon until i looked more closely at the bottle. Not terrible but pretty bland.

Pours a pale cloudy gold with a white head. Smells of hops, some wheat, and citrus. Tastes of orange zest, mildly bitter hops, and wheat. Medium in body and carbonatiob. Overall it's a slightly below average IPA.

Appearance: Cloudy golden, with a thick white head and no lace.

Aroma: Fruity citrus, with lots of orange. Nice.

Taste: More orange and some slight bitter but fairly juicy hops. Nod of bitter at finish. Not a bad IPA, but really very much an average and pretty forgettable one.

A: Hazy orangish yellow, large white head, good lacing

S: Not much of anything, maybe a little hop

T: Nice hoppy bitterness right up front, a little malty sweetness

M: Light to medium

O: Not much going on. It drinks well and has a little flavor to it which for me gives it a place among the lawnmower beers but not gonna win any awards.

Look: Hazy golden yellow with thick whie head.
Smell: Grapefruit, orange with coriander.
Taste: malty with floral and citrus notes on the back end.
Feel: average at best. An Ipa designed for people, who are new to IPAs. Good beer none the less

In the Law of Unintended Consequences, The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is enabling me to conduct a buncha brewery horizontals (same brewery, different beers) & today are Blue Moon offerings! This beer marks my last of this horizontal.

From the bottle: "Brewed With Four Varieties of Hops".

At last, vindication! I despise bottles & I deeply loathe screwed-up screw-top bottles. With each previous offering, I have had to hold my seething anger in check, but since this one is an "unfiltered White IPA", it was fair game for an aggro pour. This raised two fingers of dense, creamy, rocky, off-white head with great retention. Hallelujah! Color was a cloudy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose had a nice hoppy bitterness, primarily of grapefruit citrus, but I also caught a whiff of cool, minty pine in there. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very much of grapefruit, but that was about it. Four varieties of hops?!? What happened to anything but Citra? Cascade for aroma? Okay, but I wasn't getting the entire picture, no matter how hard I tried. Finish was dry and bitter and while it was an okay AIPA, it seemed kind of one-dimensional. YMMV.

I have become fortunate (?) enough to live long enough for a dream to come true. CANned beers are now MUCH more CANveted than their bottled CANterparts! Now, nearly everything is CANned, while bottles are scarce. OMFG. I beCAN the CANQuest (tm) in CANger, in response to a pooh-poohing of craft beer in CANs & now, I am overwhelmed! Today is Su, 09 Aug 2020 & it is time for a CAN re-review.

From the CAN: "Blue Moon Brewing Company * Est. 1995"; "Brewed With Four Varieties of Hops[.] For our unfiltered White IPA, we complimented the citrus hop character with wheat and a hint of orange peel. Then we dry-hopped it with Cascade, Citra, and Huell Melon hops for a bright hop aroma. Hoppy. Unfiltered. Balanced."

All good to know, especially the latter two. The former meant that I CAN CANduct an inverted aggro Glug without impunity & the latter might explain why I felt it was kind of bland on my original, initial review. Once I CANpleted my initial Glug, I was faced with two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with very good retention. Color was a hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose smelled strongly of pine with just a hint of CANtaloupe and lemon. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was nice - pine, grapefruit, lemon & a bit of CANtaloupe, but all rather muted, as though they were afraid that too many IBUs might be off-putting for the typical Blue Moon CANsumer. 8=( These are enlightened IPA times, fellas! Most beer drinkers know what to expect in the style. Don't hold back! Finish was semi-dry, but I was left feeling unfulfilled. This had real potential & I think that with some tweaking, it could be a really good beer. As it stands, in its current iteration, it is kind of mediocre. YMMV.

Over-attenuated and dry beer. Suffering from absolutely no malt profile and nothing but long-boil bitterness of a virtually flavorless hop. Avoid this beer.

For what Blue Moon was going foran IPA with a wheat background, this is a great beer. It tastes like a cross between a Hefeweizen and an IPA. The hops definitely show through right up front. Well done Blue Moon.

It is kinda just a rather bitter version of the always enjoyable Blue Moon original. It has a lot more bite to it and something that you have to sip on for a while. It has similar feel, but with a nasty after taste.

Ok I hate IPA'S but I love Blue Moon so I bought this thinking it might be a good IPA. Wrong no such thing even though I'm trying this after a Sam Adams Whitewater IPA it's better but still a horrible beer.

I don't see any date on the label or bottle.

Appearance: The body of the beer is a light milky yellow with a thick fluffy white head. Good retention and lacing.

Aroma: It has a bit coriander aroma. There is a bit of a zesty lemon aroma.

Taste: Again the coriander is here in force. It is followed by a light zesty orange and lemon flavor with just a light bitterness that folds into a soft pine and lemon flavor in the finish. It tastes excellent. The focus of the flavor the "white" rather than the "IPA" but there is still a nice fresh hoppy flavor to the beer.

Mouthfeel: It opens with a smooth light body that retains a bit of texture. The bitterness is low on the beer but just enough to entice the palate. It finishes nice and clean; the whole flavor profile of the beer is very clean. Very drinkable.

Overall: It is an amazingly well made beer that, while not giving too much focus to the IPA side of the house, gives enough attention to the hops that it doesn't feel neglected. While I would call this beer perfect it is clear that they really nailed this beer and the whole White IPA sub-style. It is full of flavor and it straddles the line evenly enough that both Witbier and IPA lovers will enjoy it. I did, and I would both buy it again and recommend it.

Appearance: Pours a hazy yellow-gold with prominent sediment. The head pours large, coarse, and white, but soon fades to scattered archipelagos of foam on the surface.

Aroma: Rather hop forward for New Belgium, with a somewhat earthy, musty character. Wheat malt, orange rind, and coriander are notable as well.

Taste: The taste begins with piney and earthy hops, beneath the relatively strong hop presence (for Blue Moon), there is wheat malt, orange rind, and coriander, though all of these are overshadowed by the hops. Finishes with a lingering, mildly earthy hop note, and mild coriander.

Mouthfeel: Soft and fairly full, with delicate carbonation.

Drinkability: Not bad really, it makes me think of Blue Moon Belgian White, but with an earthy hop character.

Presentation: Packaged in a custom twelve ounce brown glass bottle with a twist-off crown, packaged in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

A nice, lemon color pour with a small head is followed by a scent that has hints of citrus and hops. The taste is lighter than a typical IPA, but still rather tasty, with some lemon and hop undertones.

Look - hazy lemonade
Smell - a slight citrus + spice
Taste - smooth, citrusy malty goodness with a slight hop bite on the end
Feel - moderate carbonation - easy drinking beer
Overall - this is a good session beer, with a 6% ABV. Not sure if I'd classify this as an IPA but nonetheless a good tasting brew. Goes down easy, not overly priced. This is a good "go to" beer for a mixed crowd party. Nothing offensive but nothing award winning.

This "IPA" would only get away with it name among non beer connoisseurs . The appearance is nice, foggy golden with nice lacing and quarter-inch head. The wide variety of hops are frankly difficult to taste. This is a light brew for the masses. All of he spice and citrus whatnot were mild at best. Typical Blue Moon, not character or uniqueness.

Appearance: Light yellow color that appears hazy but there's no visible sediment. Whatever called it's too thick to see my fingers on the other side of the glass. Attractive white cap and lacing.

Aroma: Yeasty, vegetable, slightly spicy, something a bit floral, malt too light to notice.

Taste: Brewed with four varieties of hops all of which are tucked away neatly in a corner. The only orange and coriander I could find were the words on the label. A colorless (pun intended) version of the style and an IPA in name only. The flavor is pleasant in an unoffending way, what's there comes across as a mildly tart lighter style of brew with hints of flavor rather than actual flavor. It is pleasant but empty like a politician's smile. Hops do make an appearance at the finish, which is clean, and linger slightly in the aftertaste, which is short.

Texture: Thicker than thin but thinner than medium.

Overall: This is an IPA? Call the Hop Police. I guess it's official now, you can slap an IPA label on just about any ole thing. Tasting blind I would've guessed a tart wheat beer. A Blue Moon IPA for Blue Moon fans I suppose. Truth be told I like it better than regular Blue Moon and wouldn't be surprised if others feel the same way.

Cloudy blondish.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this smells like wet dog to me.

Hops, Grapefruit, Citrus, semi-sour aftertaste.

Mostly good feel.

Different and refreshing. Not the best, but good.

Reading some of the other reviews, I am going to venture a guess that not everyone has the same taste-palate, and there are generally two opinions of this beer: Great for a macro, full of subtle flavors and nuances, and where I'm at, an okay IPA with citrus notes. Definitely worth a try in case you happen to be one of the people that can appreciate all the nuance without the hop and citrus overpowering your palate

A moderate pour from a 12 ounce twisty bottle to a 10 ounce Pilsener sampling glass yields a short, but creamy and fairly sticky head. The beer is a delightfully hazy lemon-yellow color with very light carbonation.

A very interesting, fruity and sweet aroma that reminds me of Rhine wine. The aroma-flavor has a definite floral character, with subtle notes of melon, clover blossoms, wild flowers, rhubarb, and honey. Perceived bitterness is surprisingly low, with the overall impression something akin to a delicate white wine, but with a frothy and refreshing mouth feel and finish.

This is a damn well-crafted brew that showcases hops without killing your taste buds with them. Another score from my favorite macro brewer.

Hazy yellow-gold beer with white head. Nose is dominated by lemony citrus (I know the label says that it's made with oranges, but I get a lemony smell). Some yeast in nose as well. Taste is mildly pleasant, starts a little tart then opens to include the malt base. Label says that this ale is made with four types of hops, and they blend well, but even all together are not particularly assertive for an IPA. Mouthfeel a little sudsy, a little soft, leaves a bit of a coated feeling.

Best-by date of "SEP2616" stamped on bottle; poured into a nonic and drank 3 June 2016.
