Blue Moon Short Straw Farmhouse Red Ale has a thin, cream-colored head, a somewhat hazy, rust color, streaming bubbles, and little-to-no lacing. The aroma is of fairly pungent, sweet, grain, with a background of indistinguishable spices. Taste is of rather sweet malt, white bread, a touch of pepper, and spices. Mouthfeel is thin to medium, and Blue Moon Short Straw Farmhouse Red Ale finishes semi-dry, sweet, and easy going, but ultimately a bit dull. Overall, for beer in general, it is average, but for a flavored concoction, it’s very good. Worth a check-see.

Pours a light amber color with a thin head, head fizzes away very quickly and leaving no lacing, seems very carbonated just no head retention.

Smell is very sweet and my first instinct is... SKITTLES! It smells like skittles! The mixture of the malt, light fruit and whatever yeast has combined to a skittle-y aroma, not that I mind that since skittles used to be my favorite candy (now replaced with peanut butter cups), not much of a hop presence though.

Taste is not skittles unfortunately (or fortunately for some), sweet malt front with an adequate amount of spicing that follows up, carbonation is medium-high but closer to the middle range, body is slightly lacking, hint of a peppery finish, not overly sweet like I had initially expected.

From the Blue Moon Fall Sampler 12-pack, this beer pours a lovely reddish-copper that gives a nice, cream colored head that takes a couple of minutes to fully dissipate and leaves a lot of lacing both on the surface of the beer and on the side of the glass. Carbonation is pretty good with lots of bubbles rising to the surface.

Smell is sweet and malty with a nice hint of hops, nothing more. Taste is much the same -- hops are backed off quite a bit which is actually quite fine for this kind of beer. A little bit of earth and some very nice citrus notes and that's it. The real flavor is in the spicy and tart flavor of the beer, where the signature orange peel of the Blue Moon brewers is front and center. Sweet, bready malt is next, and this beer, brewed with white pepper, is fragrant and peppery. Mouthfeel is crisp and light.

Overall this is a particularly refreshing and delicious beer and my favorite from the Harvest sampler. Just a shame it's so hard to find.

To good health and good beer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light copper color, with a thin off-white head that fades very quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strawberries, light caramelized malts, some Belgian yeast and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of strawberries and caramel. Then a hearty but not too heavy malt character comes in along with some Belgian yeast breadiness. The hops presence is mild and there isn’t much balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little flavorful, goes down ok, not too filling, decent kick, not the best representation of style, it’s flat out just a very mediocre beer overall.
