When the bartender served me this beer the first thing I noticed was the black color, the next: it was served in a 14oz mixing glass. I had just been cheated out of 2oz of beer. Oh well, it happens in the States. Gasoline and milk are certified by the state to be one gallon. Beer, screw you. You'll get what they server ya.
Enough ranting, on to the review. Black with tan head, low carbonation. Roast malt in the nose, then ethanol? Something clear. . .Tasted like stout mixed with tonic water. Just a really peculair taste that let's me know something when wrong here. I exchanged it for a slighly better Simon Bagley Stout 1.5 out of 5. It was all I could do to finish the 2nd beer just to not look like an complete A-hole.

My all time favorite from Onopa/new ownership. A deep dark brown almost black pour, tan head.
Good aroma, mostly coffee, ample roasted malt.
A smooth oily taste to the beer, more chocolate now, same degree of coffee, but very well rounded, smoothed out the bitterness no doubt with the oats. Its really just a standard, oatmeal stout, which is one of my fave styles. Nothing pretentious, just a solid beer to style. Good pricing on these.

Appearance: Root beer-ish brown, fairly thick, though it does let some light through. It was poured with almost no head so I can't comment much on that, though it appears to be a tannish beige.
Smell: Pure sweetness, lots of molasses, figs, coffee, and chocolate chips with a hint of maple syrup. There is a brighter fruitiness to it, too, of apples or cherries.
Taste: Extremely malty but not overwhelmingly sweet - caramel, molasses, licorice, malted milk, and a light mocha bitterness dominate. Hops only contribute fruitiness; adequate bitterness comes from the roasted malts, and the beer is plenty dry despite its malty goodness.
Mouthfeel: Not as velvety smooth and chewy as an oatmeal stout should be, but sufficiently thick and perfectly dry.
Drinkability: Amazing - a simple, satisfying oatmeal stout that articulately delivers all the flavors you'd hope for from the style.

Originally reviewed September 17, 2005. On tap at the Big Lake Brewfest. Lucious oaky chocolate aroma. Brown fringed deep black pour. More meat in the flavor, like pork fat, rich with more chocolate and scotch notes. Solid. Finishes in chocolate and a hint of cayenne.

Went to Onopa for a show and took in a few beers, writing notes down on a little receipt that my cousin pulled out of her purse. Needless to say, I got some strange looks.
This beer is the only one I remembered from my previous trip to Onopa, and for good reason. This is one smooth, easy-drinkin', bad boy oatmeal stout. Pours a very dark brown/black. Tough to judge if it was totally opaque because the lighting was so bad at the bar. Smelled great, of burnt coffee grounds. Taste was more of the same, roasted coffee, delicious. Full-bodied and leaves a great bitter taste clinging to your throat. Tastes exactly like what coffee grounds smell like.
