I have been a loyal mail-order customer with ABS for several years, after seeing their add in a homebrewing magazine at a time when I was starting to get fed up with the high cost of homebrewing. One look at the ABS website showed me it was just the big-name brew supply I had been ordering from that had skyrocketing prices, not the hobby in general, or at least not ABS. Recently I made the connection that they were located in Raleigh and I could visit when I was there seeing family, and I'm glad I did.
In person, this is a medium to large sized homebrew shop, in my experience. It is located in an older warehouse-type building that has been renovated to include their shop as well as the Raleigh Brewing Company. ABS has aisles you can wander through with everything a brewer or winemaker needs. There is also an area of the shop reserved for employees only, so they can put together orders and packages for customers. You can order from home on their website and then pick up in person for free, if you are in the area. I have always found their prices noticeably cheaper (sometimes up to half-off on some items) than their mail-order competitors, and shipping is reasonable and fast. Their selection is comparable to that of the leading websites, and I have always gotten fresh, high quality ingredients from them.
In person, the staff was friendly, helpful and welcoming. They seemed genuinely happy to talk to a long-time mail-order customer, and were knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their work. They also pointed out that the Raleigh Brewing company was literally in the same building and suggested I should stop over there for a beer before I left. My kind of people!
Keep up the good work, ABS!

Cool store with plenty of everything you might need to brew.
Helpful staff.
Plenty of hops and yeasts.
Various kegs.
Lots of books and magazines.
And, Raleigh Brewing is in the the same building as ABS. You can go next door and have a beer before and after shopping.
Several restaurants within walking distance of ABS. Well worth checking out.

Went by Atlantic brew supply today to drop off entries for a local contest. The staff was very helpful including checking to be sure the bottles were up to spec for the competition. The store has everything a homebrewer could possibly need. Well stocked and easy to find items. I was greeted by 3 different staff members who were quite helpful. My only problem is that this store isn't closer to my hometown.

This is a great homebrew shop! They carry just about everything and let you buy only what you need so there's no pile of leftovers that never get used. John and his team offer excellent advice too. And you can get a pint over at the brewery side of the business to help make the shopping experience go even smoother.
