Appearance: Arrives at the bar with a very hazy burnt orange color; the two inches of foam leave a webby pattern of lacing

Smell: The hop resins can be smelled before the bartender places the glass on the counter - the aromatics of tropical fruit and pine are bursting

Taste: Caramel malt forms the backbone for a second and then the hops assault the palate, bringing bitterness first and subtle flavors second; guava and passion fruit add a tropical dimension to the grapefruit pith and pine; herbal elements are in the mix, as well; the bitterness never lets up and lingers well into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: This is quite a DIPA; I like the malt profile but the 120 IBUs are a bit too much; I am afraid the brewery needs to update their website mission statement - here is what they say:

"The quick and dirty is that Karben4 specializes in English-style malt bombs...we only use malts and hops in synergy...Above all, we require our brews to be balanced. When you are spending your hard-earned money on a pint you shouldn't have to fight through a rough spot in the flavor profile to get to the good part."

Well, in this beer I had to fight through quite a rough spot!

On tap at Karben4's taproom. Full pint poured into a Karben4 snifter 9/14/2014.

A- Dark copper body, frothy thick white head with excellent retention time. I think they pour it intentionally to get plenty of head... but for the most part, this is a great looking beer with voluminous rings of lacing.

S- Tons of citrus, grapefruit, floral notes and even a bit of pine resin. Balanced nicely by a sweet caramel malt backbone. This is a lot hoppier than I expected for a Karben4 offering. Really, really juicy.

F- As in the nose, there is a lot of aromatic hops here that make this a very juicy bit of caramel. Grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral hops dominate up front, with the sweet caramel pale malt backbone coming into play in the middle of the palate; then the pine finishes things out with a nice dry bitterness. This is great and easily the best Karben4 beer I've had so far. Very well-executed, hoppy and complex.

M- Substantial medium-thick mouthfeel, quite resinous but dry with a nice carbonation to it. Very easy to drink despite being fairly bitter on the backend with the pine resin.

O- Overall a good double IPA, and one I can get behind locally. This is very good with a lot of hoppiness and the right amount of balance to it. It seems to be more of a west coast style IPA but with a nice east coast style IPA citrus contribution. Overall pleased with this one, and I've had a lot of great double IPAs.

12oz bottle poured into glass.

Appearance: Pours a lovely hazy dark amber with a fair amount of bubbles flowing up through it. Small off-white head lingers for a bit on top.

Smell: Ooooh the hops. This isn't over the top, though. It smells... smooth and velvety, if smooth and velvety could be a proper descriptor. Malty might be a better term.

Taste: Well, that's a "good" different taste. It really tastes like it smells. Maybe with a hair more punch to it than the smell would have implied. I definitely like it more and more as I drink this.

Mouthfeel: Pretty thick overall, as others have noted, compared to other in the style.

Overall: $4.49 for the last bottle at Downer Wine & Spirits in Milwaukee. Worth buying a bottle and I'm glad I tried it.

12 oz bottle poured into a Central Waters snifter

Dark amber color with a finger and a half of fluffy white head.

Smelled very citrusy from a distance and had a slight alcohol scent as well

Taste was sweet and malty up front and bitter on the back end but the two didn't meld well. It was slightly disjointed. Lots of alcohol on the taste for 8.4%. I expected higher abv for the booziness.

Mouthfeel was thick and slightly syrupy.
