July 2009: 500 ml bottle, from Systembolaget, thanks to Ole R! ABV is 4.5%. Dark brown colour, big and lasting tan head. Nice aroma of caramel malts and fruity hops, hints of roasted malts, resin and smoke. The flavour is well balanced between the malts and hops, some roasted notes, hints of burnt caramel, nuts, pine and resin, dry and bitter finish. Long bitter aftertaste.

Jämtlands Pilgrim Ale, ABV: 4.5%.
500 ml bottle, 22.90 SEK at Systembolaget.

A: The liquid is deep red, almost like thick blackcurrant juice, and in my world too dark to be considered a pale ale. The head is big and beige. Great retention.

S: A slightly burnt aroma of roasted malt, fruity hops, brown bread and hints of toffee, lemons and dish soap (but it's not that bad).

T: Burnt, somewhat citric flavours of malt, brown bread, butterscotch, lemon and lime. Big hop character, and a long bitterness with rye bread and honey towards the end.

M: The liquid is seemingly light, considering the big flavours. The finish is dry.

O: The 'Pilgrim' is a good session beer, but it's a bit dark - when I want a nice roasted beer I'd probably choose a stout, but that's just me. Though I guess it would make a great combo with a moose steak (or something in that style).

An amber beer with an off-white head that leaves good lacing.

The smell is in the sweet area rather clean, syrup, some shortbread, citric hop notes - orange,

Tasting somewhat sweet toffee, some orange sour as well but mainly bitter hops, grass and a bit floral. A remaining bitter aftertaste. Very well balanced.

Rather high carbonation, small bubbles and a creamy feeling.

A really good ale, suitable for a steak pie or some fish'n chips. Or just drinking.

A: This Ale pours light brown, with a close long white head that doesn't shrink for a rather long time.

S: Malt!!! There is also floralhops and some fruit. Raisins and alkohol are two smells that aren't to strong - but noticable.

T: First there is a strong taste of hops (I'm guessing that there is som Cascade in it). Then there is a dry taste, with lots of malt, some fruit and raisins. The aftertaste is a long one with nice bitterhops-tone.

M: The mouthfeel is dominated by a rich creamy dryness.

D: The boys at "Jämtland Bryggeri" sure knows what they are doing. This is a nice complex pale ale that I recommend.

Oh, this is a beer I've had several times. Probably one of the first "craft beers" I've had when my beer interest started to grow, and I must say, I still like it. It pours a brown color with a nice white foamy head. Smell is malty and fruity, slightly nutty. I think it's also a typical "Jämtland-note" in the smell, but it's not a negative thing. Taste is fruity and malty with notes of caramel and nuts. A slight sourness makes it self visible, but it's not to bad. Maybe a bit thin in the mouth, but on the other hand highly drinkable.

Pours a deep red-orange with a 2 cm tan head. Leaves a bit of lacing.

Smells of coffee, celery, licorice, lemon. It's fairly fruity in aroma, which I'm noticing to be fairly common for nearly all the Swedish beer I've tried. They also seem to share a similar hops profile.

Mouthfeel is a bit creamy with medium carbonation.

Taste is hoppy bitterness, roasted malt, honey, grapefruit, toffee, and a tiny bit of strawberry jam.

Not bad at all.

Poured with an amber color and nice, thick foam. Both smell and taste were typical for a pale ale, fruity and earthy. The same brewer's Bärnsten, which come close to an ale taste although it's a dark lager, tastes like a watered down version of Pilgrim. It's a surprisingly decent Swedish beer.

Decently understated bitter. Good foam and medium light brown colour. citrus and carmel. Drinkable and lower alcohol makes it quite the session ale, I liked that and good hoppiness and floral and cirus aroma. thanks Madsberg on our annual trade.good carbonation.

Medium sized bubbles, light brown foam, and dark red-brown colour. Lots of foam and a massive crater!

The beer has got a strong, typical smell for an un-pasteurized brew: Lots of diacetyl and an almost chemical smell of malt.

The carbon oxide is fresh and surprisingly strong for an ale, but it works OK with the firm mix of malts.

The bitterness is almost perfect: Strong and robust. Yet, it doesn’t get out of hand but it balances the complex blend of malts (Goldings and Caramel, I think) in a great way. There are some tones of fruit and a passing hint of parfume. The long aftertaste is first dominated of the sweet, buttery taste of the malts but after some time, the hops rises to the surface followed by a little sweetness.

A very skilfully crafted ale, recommended to all lovers of this style. Frankly, I am impressed of the small Jämtlands Bryggeri, located in the north of Sweden: The Jämtlands Pilgrim can easily compete with the best British ales!

The name of this beer comes from the small village “Pilgrimsstad” (Pilgrim’s Town) where the brewery is located. The town was part of a medieval pilgrim route to the northern Norwegian town Trondheim, where the mortal remains of St. Olav (the most important saint in Scandinavia at the time) is buried.

Highly enjoyable, very aromatic, lots of hops in the aroma. Very citusy, spicy, hopppiness, and perhaps a little oily or buttery, quite enjoyable to drink, not that complex, but full of flavour. Enjoys the same sort of characters of their ESB and bitter, nice little session ale.
