Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally brewed as our hoppy welcome to Spring after the long, dark months of winter, this low ABV, kölsch inspired ale is cool fermented and dosed with Nelson Sauvin. Lower fermentation temperature slows the yeast's metabolism and provides balance by gently subduing super-fruity esters and spicy phenols. Sprang is refreshingly light bodied with aromatics of earthy evergreen, passion fruit, and faint doughy malt. Flavors of concord grape, mango, and herbaceous white wine interweave with cracker-crisp, pilsner malt character and minimal bitterness. The finish is dry with a lasting touch of grain.

Had on tap. Pours cloudy, caution light yellow in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is melon, lemon, grapefruit rind and light cracker. Has a sweetish start with a bitter finish, light bodied, and moderate carbonation. Bitter by Trillium standards, loads of flavor for the abv. Tastes more like a session IPA than a kolsch. Really tasty beer. Could have several even though I would put this in the middle of the pack of what I have had from Trillium.

Fantastic appearance. The slightly hazed, golden colored liquid was topped by a fluffy, four finger tall crop of bright white, meringue-like froth. The head slowly receded, leaving a thick, drippy curtain of lacing in its wake.

The nose was pure Nelson hop amazingness. Super fragrant and bright. Really intense and unique. White wine notes dominated. Loads of grape must. The mustiness was really over the top. Uber dank. Marijuana notes were in full effect. White grapefruit was also quite noticeable. Slightly lemony. Tropical fruits came through as well.

The flavor was less extreme than the nose but still amazing. Crisp, winey and dry. Loads of grape must on the front end. Citrusy in the center. White grapefruit dominated. Quite lemony as well. Fairly tart. There was a dank, weed-like mustiness. Touch of mango and passionfruit. The beer finished with some crackery, German style malts and grapefruit peel. Moderately bitter.

The mouthfeel was crisp and frothy. Medium bodied. The liquid contained a bubbly, moderate effervescence.

Nelson hopped beers seem to be more and more popular these days but none in my opinion show off this hop better than Trillium Brewing's Sprang. This beer displays some fantastic and unique notes that I never knew could be found in a beer.

A-Pours a hazy yellow color. Thinner white head. Head is a soft, fluffy blanket that sits atop the pretty illuminated body of the beer. Light lacing.

S-First I must say, once I found out this was Nelson Sauvin hopped I was really excited. Nelson is my favorite hop varietal. Upon first whiff, I am immediately ecstatic. A Kolsch hopped to the brim with perhaps the most unique smelling hop in the world. The Nelson hops explode with herbal, onion and lemon hops. The hops smell green and vinous but they also impart some wonderful fruity, tropical notes. Hops are spicy, too; or is that the rye? Such a wonderful aroma.

T-The flavor of the hops are fruitier and more tropical. I still get that vinous flavor but the more coercive 'green' hop elements found in the nose have softened and turned into a medley of passion fruit, mango, and white peach. I really do understand why people equate the flavor to white wine in some essences; it gives off a Sauvignon Blanc flavor. Hey, that's where the name came from, right? The Kolsch aspects of this beer are hidden by the shocking hoppiness but I can pick them up to some extent. It finishes with a crisp, cracker and grain flavor along with a spiciness that I will attribute to both the hops and the rye.

M-Light bodied with noticeable bitterness. Soft carbonation. Frighteningly drinkable. I would substitute this water any day. It maintains the thirst quenching qualities of a Kolsch but it almost has a cask feel with its light carbonation (especially as it warms). Ultimate session beer.

O-One of my favorite breweries utilizing my favorite hop within a style that deserves more attention. An absolute gem of a beer and one of my favorites from Trillium. This may not be for everyone but it's definitely, definitely, definitely for me; what a unique brew!

16 oz can dated 4/07/17 (6 weeks)

Pours a stunning bright and soft yellow gold color, very cloudy with a 2 finger fluffy head that settles down to a 1 finger bed of tiny soap bubbles. It sounds very seltzery on the pour, almost hissing at you.

Aroma is moderately strong with grapefruit and grass tones. Delightfully fresh smelling.

The taste has a tartness up front full of citrus, cut grass and spruce gum that transforms into a wine and malt blend at the end. Someone below described it as "lemon verbena" -- nailed it, as I have the stuff growing on the edge of my yard and I smell its fragrance when mowing. Moderate bitterness that gets masked by the tartness. This is a very appealing and interesting flavor profile.

Feel i crisp, effervescent and light with maybe some chalkiness at the end.

If we take the term Kolsch off the table I can appreciate the complexity of this "impression" of the style. This is such a refreshing beer that deserves great praise IMO.

I had this beer on tap at Deep Ellum in Allston. The keg had just kicked and I got the first glass from a fresh keg. It was served in a willi becher glass.

It poured an incredibly cloudy pale yellow that in certain light almost appeared grey. The head was frothy and light and lasted a good while. It smelled very herbal and lemony with a very faint hint of breadiness. The taste wasn't too far off from the aroma, the hops dominated the flavor upfront and there was some spiciness that lingered on the back of your throat in the aftermath. Combined with a grainy mouthfeel, the best way to describe this beer I think is earthy. It was drinkable, but it was nowhere near what I expected.

I typically love Trillium's beer, but was very let down by this considering it was labeled as a Kolsch. Maybe it was because it was the first pour and there may have been sediment at the bottom of the keg, but I detected very few Kolsch-like aspects to this beer. If I put this next to a Reissdorf and told someone that they are the same style of beer, they would think I was mad.
