Melcher Street IPAMelcher Street IPA
Notes: This popular edition in our “Street” series of India Pale Ales spotlights the remarkably complex Mosaic hop. Melcher Street is hazy, pale orange in appearance and emits aromatic qualities of grapefruit, mild-earthy pine, and mango on the nose. Dank flavors of pine and green hop, along with juicy notes of tropical fruit, melon, and peach, are accentuated with crisp malt character, mild bitterness, and a soft, effervescent mouthfeel.

MALT: American 2-row Barley, White Wheat, C-15, Dextrine, Dextrose

750ml bottle with a 050215 sticker on it (assuming bottling date) poured into a Duvel tulip.

L - Pours a pale orangey golden color, almost grapefruit juice-like in appearance. A big two finger cap of fluffy white head lingers forever, eventually leaving lots of lacing on the glass.

S - Very citrusy and grassy up front - lots of oranges and grapefruit, touch of limes, faintly sweet..very juicy.

T - Grapefruit is front and center, mix of other citrus - mostly oranges but a bit lemony too. Medium hop bitterness. Mild malt presence - sugary sweet and lightly grainy.

F - Medium body with a creamy mid-level carbonation. A bit sticky in feel and loaded with hop flavors and a lingering dry-ish hop bitterness. Grassy on the exhale after each sip. The 7.3% alcohol is hidden very well.

O - Hard to find fault in this one. Excellent IPA all around. Right up there with the best IPA's in my memory.

A-Pours a mildly hazed orange. More chill haze than anything else. The head birthed from the pour is thin but dense and slightly frothy. It leaves sticky lacing.

S-Pretty spectacular aroma. I initially get a bunch of fruity, exotic hop-notes along with a noticeable green onion aspect. Mango, marijuana, garlic, melons. The hoppiness hits all ends of the spectrum but they seem to balance out well.

T-The specifics of the nose are all present yet they melt into one another. Quite a hop concoction. It has a very earthy flavor that I think began with that green onion/garlic portion I found in the nose, I love it. The fruity hoppiness is brimming with guava, mango, melon and papaya...yes, that's specific but these flavors are quite exotic and very concentrated. Citrus and grass as well.

M-Has plenty of body to it. Hop resins are present. Just a tickle of alcohol. Softer carbonation but that may be from the pouring median. Modest bitterness; it's clearly bitter but not excessive.

O-Ho Hum, another Trillium offering that tastes like it was consumed from the cupped hands of Zeus. Love grabbing growlers from these boys; the beer is always delicious and the employees are cool beans.

Freshly tapped growler poured into an antique Pilsner glass

Two finger frothy white foam cap. Amazing lacings. Hazy yellow with faint carbonation

Aroma of pine & citrus , orange

Pine notes on the tip of the tongue and in the middle. Nice hop flavoring but withoutt the bitterness.

No sudsing, almost creamy. Pine hops linger on the middle of the tongue bit without the bitterness.

Stopped by Trillium and loaded up with a bunch of different beers. Went with ratings from BA and first up was Melcher Street. Love it, delicious beer . Repeating this one

On tap at Worden Hall, 12oz pour for $8 ... pricey for a local IPA IMO.

Poured out a muddled hazy milky golden hue, lacing did a good job sticking around. Aromas of evergreen, pomelo, and a dirty back end of unsettled yeast and grain. Medium bodied with a flour-like pull on the palate from what has been left in this brew. Hop bitterness is there, at a level of what and IPA should be. Flavors of papaya, honey dew rind, and apricot come to mind with and edge of citrus. Malt backbone is clouded and seems to be slightly take over by a grainy overtone that is likened to flour. Very similar flavors to a lot of their IPAs, just some differences from the hops.

They do a great job their darker beers, saisons, etc ... wish they would clean up their IPAs a little bit.

really and truly one of the best india pale ales ever. its murky and yeasty and pale almost beige, wallpaper looking, but super heady and fluffy and sexy, looks like I want it to, raw and fresh as they come. the nose is the best feature of this one. it smells like a bubbling cauldron of all my favorite hop strains, just more bold and fresh and alive and upbeat and forward than any other beer, even ones that use the same blend and quantity. the freshness needs to be mentioned, I got a bottle at the brewery, and it was bottled about two hours before I bought it, and les than four hours before I drank it, so you really cant get it any fresher than I did, which is just amazing. this place is a mecca, and even though you cant drink there, the beers they are turning out are among the best on the planet, I have no doubt. pineapple juice and passion fruit and pine and citrus and every half assed hop descriptor we all use all the time, times a million. very intense, and one thing about the flavor is that its also very bitter. a lot of these type ipas never resolve, they don't get bitter, and without a lot of grain flavor, its like a sentence without punctuation, and so the bitterness serves this well, even if its high. it was nicer and nicer as it warmed up, and I almost regret letting it chill as much as I did. the hop profile on this is entirely unique, not like any other beer, and its really hard to describe, almost iron rich like raw spinach or kale or something, lettuce juicy too, crunchy but light, not at all filling, and with the perfect alcohol content. I had a few from these guys so far, with a fair few to go, but this is easily the winner in the early going, one of the best india pales ive ever had.

Poured from a 16oz can into a pint glass. Dated 11/22/16, which is almost 2 months old at this point. I've had this beer before and I remember more aromatics - I assume they have dissipated with age (what a shame), Aromatics are coming across as papaya and peach. Color is golden orange with a slight haze to it and the head is thin with minimal lacing. Hops hit the mouth hard early on but the flavor quickly fades into a tangy, fruity sweetness with moderate maltiness. It is a clean, effervescent aftertaste with no stickiness. Overall the taste is very pleasing as the sweetness is subtle but ever-present. I would have liked more aromatics as that is my favorite part of Trillium beers in general, but I think the age of the beer could have been a factor.

The beer pours a nice golden, orange hue with a white foam head. Nose is pure mosaic; tropical, floral and some earthy tones. Taste follows suit with a light white wine presence, almost Nelson like. Good mouthfeel with a bit less carbonation than I was expecting. While FPPA and C St are above this IMO, this is still a solid beer that I wouldn't mind seeing in the regular lineup.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip. This was bottled today.

Appearance: Pours a pretty hazy yellowish amber and leaves a couple fingers of fluffy white head that slowly fade to a white layer atop the beer, and plenty of lacing. (4.75)

Smell: Big juicy citrus, some light earthy aromas and pine, light honey. The citrus is wonderful in here. (4.75)

Taste: Big spruce/pine comes out first, along with some pleasant earthy and big bursts of grapefruit, pineapple and more citrus. Supremely smooth and drinkable. Just wonderful. (4.75)

Mouth-feel: Medium body and creamy with medium carb. Great feel, just a little bitter, but it makes this even better. (4.75)

Overall: Possibly the best IPA I've had, and I've had almost all of Trillium's stuff. So drinkable with fantastic citrus and pine flavors throughout. I could drink this every day. (5)

O: Excellent IPA!!

Another great hazy, bright orange gold trillium offering. Stinkier hop aroma from this one - orange, pineapple. Crisp grapefruit and a biscuity malt.

Incredibly smooth and balanced - very little bitterness, creamy feel. A 750 is no problem to put down in a short amount of time.

Pours cloudy and yellow with a thick full head. Smells of citra. Very juicy, with hops and peppery notes. Taste is smooth, bitter, with tropical citrus. Bread-like and bitter aftertaste. Crazy drinkable. Overall this is has to be one of the best IPAs I've ever had. Truly the kind of delicious taste you'd crave. Will definitely be looking for this again whenever Trillium is carrying it.

The beer pours a nice bubbly and creamy head that dissipates somewhat quickly but still leaves a lot of lacing and leaves a film on the top of the beer. The beer itself is a clear orange but with some chill haze that is still see through. The beer color also appears to have slight brown notes. The beer smell is nothing short of divine. The hop notes consist of sweet orange with a bit of grapefruit and mango. Surprisingly, there also appears to be a slight green onion note. The beer taste is similar to the smell but with stronger green onion note and a much stronger grapefruit note. The sweet orange and mango notes are still there but more subdued. There also appears to be a pine resin note in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and a very smooth feel. The taste is bitter but not too much. Overall, the beer is another fine addition from Trillium and worth getting at least once.

Has that NE IPA look, lots of haziness, has a nice tropical fruit smell of grapefruit and hops, flavor is a citrus back bone. This one is good and worth trying if you see it but it is far from Trillium's best beer. I much preferred Congress street.

Cloudy, pale orange color with white finger head. Smells of grapefruit and spice. Flavors of bitter grapefruit upfront with other tropical flavors along with pepper and spice on the tongue. Medium body feel with carbonation that leaves a fizzle on the tongue.

Pours that beautiful hazy golden orange with a thick white head. The head subsides nicely leaving a ton of lacing. Smell is on point with pineapple, mango, citrus, pine, and that standard Trillium pale ale yeast. The taste matches the aroma with a pit more of the piny/resinous character leading the pack. Finishes with a ton of citrus rind and light resin. The overall feel is nice. A bit dry.

Overall this is just another solid offering from my friends to the south.

Notes from 1/10/15

A - 4 fingers of bubbly dense white head. Slightly hazy golden straw body with plenty of visible car. Excellent retention and lacing.

S- Citrus rind, sweet grapefruit, and tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, and peach). Really well balanced. Some dankness.

T - Mellow flavors. Citrus bitterness with some balanced sweetness in the finish. Also, dankness in the back. Orange. Grapefruit with a mild malt presence and tropical fruit behind.

M - Medium carb with a lighter mouthfeel for the style. Easy drinking.

750ml bottle, dated 5.20.15, poured into a Girardin snifter glass.

The beer pours a really hazy orange color, cloudy complexion with a firm head, two fingers of soapy, white bubbles that have good retention and beautiful splotches of lace is left behind. The aroma is nice, juicy citrus, primarily oranges and tangerines with a touch of rindy grapefruit, a bit of wildflower, tropical fruits with some lingering pine and crusty wheat, really nice hop punch with mild bitterness. The flavors are very good, plenty of hoppy punch to this beer, loads of pine, earthy hop spice, wildflower brings out some of that "dank" character with really nice juicy fruits on the back end, plenty of citrus and passionfruit that lingers well with just a touch of hearty wheat grain and some unexpected alcohol warmth. The mouthfeel is great, coating, medium body, super gentle and smooth with just the right touch of carbonation and a lighter finish that has a nice bite.

Verdict: A delicious IPA from Trillium, which comes as no surprise given their reputation and my past experiences. I don't typically love Mosaic as a hop, but this is executed very well, nice balance, great juiciness and it stays super refreshing.
