Notes: This amplified version of Sprang, our hoppy welcome to Spring, is a kölsch inspired ale, cool fermented and dosed heavily with Nelson Sauvin. Lower fermentation temperature slows the yeast's metabolism and provides balance by gently subduing super-fruity esters and spicy phenols. Big Sprang is medium bodied with dank aromatics of earthy evergreen, passion fruit, and faint doughy malt. Flavors of juicy concord grape, mango, and herbaceous white wine interweave with cracker-crisp, pilsner malt character and minimal bitterness. The finish is dry with a lasting touch of grain.

MALT: Pilsner, Valley Danko Rye, Dextrine, Dextrose

HOPS: Nelson Sauvin, Goldings

Not remotely a Kolsch. It’s a dank IPA.

16 oz can.

Pours a hazy straw color with a small white head. Not much retention and almost no lacing to speak of.

Smells like white grapes, passion fruit and pine. Has a subtle minty character with some cracker malt.

The flavor brings white grape skin and passion fruit with some spearmint, sweet dough, crackers and grass. Has that signature "peanut shell" flavor all Trillium hoppy beers have. This is more of an IPA than a Kolsch.

The feel is medium bodied with lower carbonation. Creamy and soft. Good for a NEIPA, not so much for a Kolsch.

Overall, this is basically just another mediocre hoppy Trillium beer that tastes like all their other hoppy beers do now. Calling this a "Kolsch" is quite the stretch.

Like the normal version of this beer, this is just not a Kolsch. You could call this a pale ale or an imperial pale or something, but by no means is it a Kolsch, even if the original recipe was inspired by a Kolsch. Kolsch's shouldn't be much above 5% ABV so 7.5% is just nutty.

That said, this is still a great beer, just not a Kolsch at all.

Dated 4/30/19 on the bottom of the can, just over 2 weeks old.

Pours a an extremely hazy pale golden yellow with a finger of slight off-white rocky head. Nose of pine resin, slight bubblegum, candied papaya, white flour, herbaceousness, sweet grain and just a hint of spice. Taste starts off with a strong white grape must + moves in to the notes of the nose with candied papaya and sweet grain especially prominent. A fantastically crushable brew for 7.5%, if I didn't know it was that high I wouldn't have guessed. Perfect for a hot summer day. Low bitterness, medium- drying, medium sweetness and a medium- well carbonated prickly body.

For once I agree with the BA 'official' rating on this one. It's tasty enough but definitely not a kolsch by any stretch. Less easy drinking than regular Sprang, if I want hoppy I'll just buy one of their APAs/IPAs

Pours a vibrant golden straw yellow. Fluffy bright white head on a heavy pour. Nose is a medley of grasses, dough and light citrus notes. A bit of a rustic quality to this beer. Grainy dough and light notes of yeast tangle with lemony citrus undertones. It’s a sizable beer both in alcohol and feel. Despite all that it still maintains refreshing qualities of a lighter Kölsch. Is it a lawn mowing beer? Probably not but it is one that would go well bbqing on a hot summer afternoon.

can courtesy of robbie of newly earned dadbod fame...thanks daddy-o! soft subtle straw color with a fizzy kolschy cap. a kolsch this is, but one that someone accidentally spilled the hops into. don't get me wrong, i love nelson & i love a good kolsch, but in this beer it is a brawl on the playground between dolph and kearney as opposed to the sweet melancholy ha-ha that we normally love from our favorite springfield bully. as it & my palate open i can appreciate what's here, but the overhopping yanks away a bit of the refreshingness of a kolsch.

16oz can, poured into a Trillium Brewing Permutation Series stemmed glass. Enjoyed on 7.11.2017, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a nice straw color, lightly hazy with golden hues and a fizzy white head with minimal retention and spotted lace. The aroma is decent, very bready, crusty pale grain, kinda rustic with a soft sourdough like quality, assertive mineral water, a bit of a tanginess from the hops, lemony with more earthy noble hop qualities. The flavors are good, noble hops, soft and green, light lemon, mineral water is nice with just a ton of bready grain that dominates this beer and brings out a light booziness as well. The mouthfeel is fine, heavier medium body, crisp with ample carbonation but very heavy for the style with a meaty finish.

Verdict: I think this is an example of a style that doesn't need to be overhopped or "imperialized." It's just too big, the breadiness is overwhelming rather than comforting, the hops are bitter and pungent rather than soft and delicate. There is refreshing quality, I think the lemon flavors help tone it down, but this beer is an exercise in excess.
