Day & NightDay & Night

Brewed by:
Trillium Brewing Company
Massachusetts, United States

Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Barrington cold brewed coffee infused blonde barleywine is the luminous counterpart to our dark, rich imperial stout. In Day & Night, we envisioned the blonde barleywine style as a way to showcase the nuanced floral, fruity, and spicy characteristics found in medium and lighter roast coffee blends. Golden-Amber in color, Day & Night exudes delightful aromas of almond toffee, graham crackers, fruity coffee, lightly acidic berries, and vanilla. Upfront flavors of creamy coffee, honey tinged malt, caramel, and tart berry blend cleanly with a slight coffee-derived bitterness.

MALT: Pilsner, Abbey, Turbinado Sugar

HOPS: Columbus

Pours a clear copper/amber color that a had ton of sediment floating around like a snow globe that was just shook up. The head was a solid 2 fingers with an eggshell creamy look that left incredible lacing and rings as it went down.

Aroma is mostly the cold brewed coffee, with char notes, biscuit, burnt grains, peppery spices, coffee grinds which resemble the light fruity gourmet coffees, tea leaf, brown sugar and sweet roasted malts. The malty aspects can't break through the coffee dominance, and while it smells good overall for me it wasn't the best complimentary ingredients.

Tastes very similar to the nose with the coffee dominating which brings a chalky bitterness, ash/charred notes, smokes malts, burnt grains, honey, peppery spices, fruity blend coffee grinds, tea leaf, brown sugar, peat moss, nutty hints, burnt coffee grinds, anise, burnt bread crust and campfire burnt marshmallow. There seems to be a fruity sweetness that comes out every once in a while before the coffee bitterness washes it away. This brew hides the 10% ABV masterfully.

Decent mouthfeel with an average level of carbonation, a medium to thick body and a nice sharp level of bitterness that hides the ABV, but this was a slow sipper and I found it confusing with most sips. A blonde barleywine is unique on it's own, so tossing in the cold brewed coffee made this one tough to figure out. It was tasty and enjoyable, but my least favorite Trillium beer to date. I love coffee in my stouts, but it doesn't work the same with a barleywine in my opinion.

I've definitely had this before, but I'm pretty sure I split it with a friend and didn't review it, as I can't find a review for it anywhere on my hard drive or on BA, so it'll be nice to revisit this one. A big, bold barleywine clocking in at 10% ABV and infused with cold brewed coffee, Day & Night is the "light" version of Trillium's Night & Day imperial stout (also with coffee).

Pours a nice looking medium-amber with a retentive chalk-white head that laces decently and in defined tiers. Tons of particulate matter in my pour, but interestingly enough for Trillium, it isn't just one big homogeneous liquid. There's a lot of translucence here, giving me full view of what I can only assume is a mélange of hops and coffee floating suspended within, almost like they're within a gelatinous substance. Very curious looking beer, especially for Trillium. Great color, head formation, retention and solid lace make this come together despite how you may feel about the suspended solids.

Nose is mocha-heavy with a lot of milk and white chocolate-like elements, espresso, vanilla, toffee, caramel, milk sugar, brown sugar, slight floral and earthy hops. Slight ripe red berries, a kiss of ethanol and a touch of grapefruit in there as well for good measure. Very complex, very intense. One of the best examples of a "blonde stout"-style setup I've experienced. I assume the higher ABV helps this all come together, as it doesn't come across much on the nose but the heftier malt bill makes the coffee pop big time.

Flavor is very smooth and incredibly detailed with coffee, caramel and English toffee taking up the forefront while a punchy, pushy and bright hop note kicks around in the middle of the palate, bringing out notes of lemon pith and grapefruit peel before fading to a smooth finish. Slight vanilla right before the transition to the middle of the palate helps bring a bit of sweetness to the proceedings here. Carbonation is lighter, lending this a heavier body which makes sense for its 10% ABV... and it feels very much in that realm after a few sips. This hides its strength for a while, especially when consumed at fridge temp, but it quickly reveals its dark side with some heftier, deeper flavors and a very slight burn towards the finish.

Overall very tasty and the coffee comes right out to the forefront, as is desired in a beer like this. Kind of seems to tiptoe between several style lines, for sure, but American Barleywine and/or American Strong Ale feel fine for this kind of extreme, off-kilter brewing. Excellent job, Trillium!

Thanks so much to my Brother for sharing this with me after the Faith No More concert at the Mann in Philadelphia, enjoyed chilled from the bomber in a goblet chilled.

The color is a hazy golden with thick white head which collapses into a ring of beads. The smell has lots of coffee with a light malt scent and light alcohol with subtle pine hop scent and a light dried fruit aroma. The feel has bitterness from coffee with light sweetness and gentle roast texture with light hops and mild alcohol warmth with residual sweetness.

The taste has a smooth coffee flavor up front with a light malt quality and semi-sweet aspect with dried fruit in the middle with nutty coffee with a slight citrus element and mild woody hop with gentle sweetness while the coffee and malt blends very well with hops and mild alcohol with a slight pine and mild toast accent as it finishes. Overall this is a great strong ale with coffee flavor that enhances the overall taste well with a rich and semi-sweet flavor that makes for a tasty blond barleywine

one of the most perfect beers i have had this year, an incredible take on the style and something wholly unique here. its a blonde barleywine, which means a lot of they crystal and caramel and sweet and dense malts are cut out, in favor of a more pale, more simple, less rich complexion, and it makes the exact right space in the middle of this beer for some impressive coffee. it smells and tastes like the best cup ive ever had, and has elements of deep roast, wet earth, bitterness, vanilla, its all there in smell and in taste. i was also blown away by just how hoppy this is on the back end. coffee bitterness in the middle fades just in time for the hop bitterness to finish the beer, really intense there, even a little overdone, but decidedly american and pretty well tasty too. you wouldnt think hops would finish coffee so well, but the same way mikkellers beer hop breakfast does it in a dark beer, its done here in a blonde one just as well. the other thing is the alcohol, its hidden so well here its scary. i drank the bottle no problem, but man am i hung over this morning... a top tier product here, worth seeking out. one of my favorite beers in a long time!

L: a normal golden brown
S: beer, coffee, caramel
T: a lingering a slight coffee tone
F: no taste of alcohol
O: Holy crap, this beer is simply unreal. I've had both in a growler and now in a bottle.
Nothing like I'd expect, it tastes like hoppy IPA with this unbelievable scent and smell of coffee. It begs you wanting more, plus it is 10% ABV. Rumor is this beer was on tap at trillium for a while. As of now, I'd consider this beer a hidden gem

750ml capped bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

This beer is kinda weird all around. Color is orange amber... not quite red ale, not quite barleywine. Nose is not quite english barleywine, not quite american barleywine, and not quite IPA but a combination of all three... oh, and there's a bit of cold brew coffee aroma floating around in there. Taste follows the now. Sweet with hints of molasses, syrup, honey and brown sugar balanced by coarse coffee grounds and a light hop creaminess. The feel doesn't really do the flavor and favors. A bit too light bodied. The carbonation is on point but when its light and flat, it just doesn't taste quite right. Dry finish.

I feel like Trillium really put itself out there with this offering but it doesn't really work for me. Strange and although its not bad, the flavors don't complement each other that well.
