Small Bird Series: Skimpy SparrowSmall Bird Series: Skimpy Sparrow
Notes: Our newest hoppy American pale ale, Skimpy Sparrow, is the latest edition in our "Small Bird Series" of lower ABV offerings. The nose is an intense, complex fusion of pineapple, grapefruit pith, and woodsy hop aromatics. Citrus rind, grape jam, and lemon fill out the flavor profile, with a firm and long-lasting bitterness. Very dry and effervescent, light to medium bodied.

MALT: American 2-row Barley, White Wheat Dextrine, C-15,

HOPS: Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe Citra, Columbus

Poured from a 32oz growler into tulip glasses, filled on 12/24:

Appearance: incredibly thick and turbid. Some might call it "unfinished," though I'm in the camp that this type of appearance has become a major part of the unofficial New England ale style. Anyway, looks like white grapefruit juice, pulp and all. Visibly hazy through the growler glass, and much more so in the tulip.

Aroma: heavy duty punch of citrus straight to the cranium upon cracking the growler. Got a little bit of white grape as well, in addition to the requisite orange, lemon, and tropical fruit. No malt at all.

Taste: it's a little like Foundation's Epiphany in its dedication to pure hops. There is no malt presence at all, and if you like a nuclear bomb of hops, this is a fantastic pale. Layers of fruitiness, with the perfect amount of piny bitterness present too. If I had to guess hop bill, I'd go with: Galaxy, Citra, simcoe? Maybe others too, but those hops seem dominant here.

Feel: medium bodied, with a much lighter carbonation than most pales, especially at 5.4%. Thick and sticky on the finish, though it is slightly dry too.

Overall: this is a very unique brew, and a very delicious one at that. It doesn't fit the traditional pale ale style at all, and it is probably arguable that it is even an APA, but the bottom line is that it is fantastic.

Drank from a 25.4 fl oz (750ml) bottle purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
06/03/16
Served in a pint glass

Turbid, yellow ochre appearance. The body was topped by a tight and frothy, two-finger tall, off-white crown that fell rather quickly to a thin film and a lasting halo. Streaky, patchy lacing trickled along the glass.

The aroma was absolutely amazing. Super fruity and juicy. Ridiculously fragrant. Tropical fruit notes dominated. Mango and passionfruit came through strongest. Loads of peach as well. Canned peaches perhaps. Hint of guava. Super sweet. Somewhat dank and weed-like too.

The flavor profile was also really solid. Definitely more citrusy and bitter than the nose. Really fruity and bright. This seemed like a total Citra hop bomb. Juicy orange notes dominated. Somewhat tart and lemony in the center. The beer finished slightly bitter with strong notes of white grapefruit and orange rind.

Decent mouthfeel. Perhaps this was the only aspect of the beer that did not completely blow me away. Medium bodied for the style with a crisp, large bubbled effervescence. The liquid turned somewhat creamy and smooth on the palate.

While similar to Tiny Chicken, Skimpy Sparrow, Trillium's other American pale ale in their "Small Bird Series," was both smoother and more complex. To the best of my recollection, this APA is on par with some of their Fort Point Pale Ale variations.

Pours a deep golden haze with white head. Nice citrus aroma. Definitely getting some orange rind. There is definitely some body, but it feels a little light in flavor. Not as full as other Trillium beers, but that doesn't mean this won't have a purpose. A great sessionable pale ale that I am hoping to see in cans.
