Dusk Trill DawnDusk Trill Dawn
Notes: Our latest collaboration with Evil Twin Brewing is a heavenly, coffee infused stout drawing inspiration from Even More Jesus & our own PM Dawn. Ascendence is inevitable with unique complexities provided by the use of experimental sugars and a small percentage of smoked malts. Bold aromas of freshly ground coffee beans, cherry jam, and vanilla extend to the palate with additional notes of intense milk chocolate, vanilla, and slight smoke. Dusk Trill Dawn is dry with a light mouthfeel and moderate bitterness.

I loved the smell of this beer. Absolute coffee bomb in your nostrils. Also easily detect quite a bit of chocolate and a hint of vanilla and of course roasted malts. Mouthfeel is a little thin for my tastes, but what really turned my off to this one after the initial smell is that the lactose is overpowering, especially on the finish. After the initial coffee explosion it fades quickly to basically a somewhat off-putting lactose shake.

Pours pitch black with a finger of light-ish brown head, that dissipates to just a thin film and very sporadic lacing. It looks dense and syrupy as it pours. Great aroma. Lots of dark chocolate and some cocoa powder. Roasted malts but no bitterness or astringency. Some inidstinct dark fruits. A bit of coffee but far less than anticipated. Taste is heavy on the cocoa powder upfront then a dominant sweetness which lingers a bit but then is abruptly negated by a bitterness that doesn't seem hop driven; likely coffee or roasted malt derived. Alcohol is completely masked, you only know it's there when you stand up after having a glass. Good mouthfeel that stays on the right side of syrupy but is decidedly viscous with a medium-full body, low+ carbonation. Overall this is a wonderful beer, definitely rich, and absolutely a sipper.

750ml bottle dated 06/22/16

Pours pitch black with a frothy brown foam head. Smells like smoky dark chocolate, graham crackery woody grains, toasted nutty earthy caramel, molasses, roasted coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, some blackberry and cherry, dark malty bliss, with mild grass and pine. Wow! This is possibly the best tasting stout/beer/drink I have ever had. At first sip I had to hold back emotions as I quietly howled "wooooooo!" to myself. Such a perfect balance with hardly any detectable booze. This is one of those beers that I would rate higher than a 5 for taste if I could. The beer screams out blackberry, cherry, almost raspberry, covered in luscious creamy dark chocolate, smoky dark roast coffee, subtle milk chocolate, vanilla, toasted roasty woody grains, nutty caramel, molasses, brown sugar, sweet dark malts, with mild earthy pine and grass. Feels medium-full bodied, thick and creamy with low carbonation. Overall an incredibly tasty coffee imperial stout.

Poured from a 25.4 oz bottle purchased at the brewery. Dated 6/22/16.

Pours a pitch black color with a 2-finger caramel head. The head has great retention and settles into a nice golden ring around the top of the beer, leaving a gorgeous coating of lacing along the way.

The aroma brings loads of fresh roasted coffee and chocolate fudge, followed by some brown sugar and freshly baked biscuits. There's also a touch of vanilla in there and just the slightest tingle of alcohol. So complex and so good.

The flavor is very coffee forward, with some vanilla and light chocolate fudge. There's a very subtle tartness in the middle that I assume is from the cherry jam and it's difficult to detect, yet extremely pleasant. The finish is slightly charred with a light amount of alcohol warmth. Amazingly complex and balanced.

The feel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. A little sticky and leaves a nice coating around the tongue and top of the mouth. Definitely some alcohol warmth but it's not overbearing. Leaves a lingering flavor of coffee after each sip.

Overall, now this is how you do an imperial stout without the use of barrels. It's complex, full of flavor, and beautifully crafted. Just a lovely beer all around. Simply amazing.

One of the few times that the company's write-up is spot-on. I can't find the "cherry jam", but the rest is pretty accurate. Love the hint of smoke in the nose and on the tongue and the coffee flavor is top-notch, but it is the super smooth mouth feel that really sets this one apart. It doesn't hide the 11.5 ABV, but it also doesn't come across as overly boozy.

The sweetness might scare a few folks away -- if a little sugar in your Imperial stouts is not your thing, you might not love this one as much as I do.

Bottom line - this is a superior coffee stout. What do we need to do to get these nice kids together again soon?

Wonderful dark color and carmel colored head on the pour. Coffee and chocolate on the nose. Sweet chocalate flavor with bitter coffee on the finish. A little on the sweet side but enough backbone to just make it work. Thick and viscous with a very pleasant effervescence. An impressive brew.

had company over all weekend, enjoyed the new trill cans... but had something tucked away for after chores on the fourth. hopefully this holds up to the trillium/evil twin reputation. love both breweries.

hazelnut, vanilla and chocolate. the cherry on the tail end is like the cherry on a sundae of delicious beer. the wife is not a fan of imperial stouts so i poured her a very small taste and she asked for a bit more. if that isnt an endorsement i dont know what else is. creamy and smooth. would be a perfect christmas beer. damn good.
