Cutting Tiles (Citra)Cutting Tiles (Citra)
Notes: Cutting Tiles is an exploratory series of Double IPA's featuring a range of aromatic single hop varietals brewed with raw wildflower honey. This new version is dosed with 100% Citra in all kettle, whirlpool and two massive dry hop additions. The local wildflower honey keeps the body light and drinkable but provides a earthy backbone. Floral and zesty up front backed up with a nuanced citrus character on the nose that continues straight through in the flavor profile. Pillowy soft mouthfeel, with a restrained bitterness on the finish. New variants to follow!

Pours hazy orange with a one finger head. Smells of sweet candied fruit, and juice. Taste is bitter, very hoppy, dry and sweet. Some tropical, but not as present in the flavor as it is in the nose. Not really tasting the honey. Maybe it needed to warm a bit first? Dry, boozy, and lightly spicy. This beer was a little low on carbonation as well. Almost seemed flat. Could just be the particular can. I was hoping for more from this, especially after enjoying more than a few 'Artaic', but it fell a little short. Still hard to be too critical of Trillium, cause it isn't a bad beer... but it's not up to snuff with their typical IPA.

L: Dried apricot, yellow-orange rose petal, and honeycomb hues greeted by a moderate 1cm fluffy white head
S: Honey, floral dankness, mango, and candied grapefruit on the nose
T: Wow - citra hops and wildflower honey really meld well together into something sugary sweet and juicy; slight crackery malt on the finish
F: A bit thinner than you might have expected for a honey-based IPA, but infinitely smooth no doubt
O: Man, I was anxiously awaiting this Cutting Tiles variant and it did not disappoint. As compared to the Galaxy and Mosaic hopped versions before this, the Citra hops do not objectively compete with the honey flavor profile. In the former variants this provide an interesting flavor contrast that formed the basis of the experience, but in the Citra version everything seems to flow together in a sweet, tropical delicious dream. Beautifully executed by Trillium and insanely drinkable, Citra Cutting Tiles is not one to be missed.

32oz growler.

Pours cloudy gold with a short head and brief retention. Aromatics are chock full of peach, grapefruit, mango, and tangerine. Extremely tropical and floral. Medium bodied with a soft, textured mouthfeel. Tropical fruit aplenty on the palate. Mango, apricot, pineapple, and grapefruit. Zero malt and low bitterness. Very dry. Finishes with long lingering tropicals and some light warmth on the throat.

Great beer, a classic example of what a NEIPA can be.

16 oz. can dated 9/14/16

Pours cloudy hazy opaque golden amber orange with a quickly dissipating frothy white foam head. Smells like big mango, peach, nectarine, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, slight booze, wildflower honey, mild crackery pilsner malts, with dank earthy herbal grass. Tastes so smooth and balanced with big juicy tropical stone fruit notes of mango, peach, nectarine, pineapple, orange, some grapefruit, wildflower honey, mild crackery malts, with dank earthy herbal grass. Feels medium-full bodied, sticky and viscous with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really great juicy tropical fruity raw wildflower honey DIPA.

It's not often that you have this much disparity between the various components of rating. There's a reason for that. Poured out in a tulip, this DIPA is golden in color. There isn't a whole lot in terms of aroma, which was very disappointing. Despite that, the flavor is incredible. It reminds me of Julius, but has a little bit of bitterness bite on the finish. There is a ton of unripe mango and papaya. It's kind of thin, perhaps a result of that honey, but there isn't much honey character. It gets better as it warms. It's my favorite of the Cutting Tiles series, but the honey seems less for flavor and more for sugar for alcohol and thinning out the feel.

16 oz can. Pours hazy yellow, thin white head slowly recedes, some soapy lacing. Mild citrusy, floral aroma. Juicy citrus and grapefruit peel early that turns very earthy and floral, ending in a very bitter grassy finish. There is an earthy bitterness that lasts a bit too long making the finish odd, which detracts from the overall great taste. Not their best brew but would certainly drink again.

Great hazy IIPA. The honey adds an interesting dimension, playing well off the earthy, fruity Citra. Dry bitterness offsets the touch of sweetness from the honey. Good stuff.
