This past August, we were fortunate to be a part of the inaugural Forever Summer Festival, hosted by The Veil at their brewery in Richmond, Virginia, where JC met owner/Head brewer, Matt Tarpey. Matt’s approach to brewing breaks from conventionalism by pushing boundaries and methodologies. IwanttoBU blends Trillium’s techniques and house character, with The Veil’s unique brewing style to create an incredibly flavorful and aromatic hop forward beer with no kettle hop additions.
IwanttoBU is a 0 IBU beer with no hop additions in the kettle. A large whirlpool addition of El Dorado, Simcoe, Citra and Citra Lupulin Powder, plus a massive dry hop (4 lbs per barrel) of Citra and Simcoe. The nose is filled with notes of pine needles, citrus zest and plum. Flavors of lemongrass and citrus emerge on the palate, complimented by a dank, piney character. The beer finishes with a mild bitterness and malty backbone.
MALT: British Pale Malt, White Wheat, Dextrin, C-15, Dextrose
HOPS: Citra, Citra Lupulin Powder, Simcoe, El Dorado

16oz can dated 3/17/23.
Pours cloudy gold with an inch-plus head of white. Moderate retention and lacing. Pungent aromatics with peach, mango, tangerine zest, candied grapefruit. Medium bodied with a soft but slickish mouthfeel. A zesty punch of hops on the palate with minimal malt and a balancing bitterness. Unripe peach, mango, orange. Finishes juicy but fairly dry.

Obtained this a while ago, as the date on the bottom of the can read 11/8/16 with "I VOTED FOR KOOOS" written below it. Yes, this beer was quite old but there was very little sediment in the liquid when I poured it out and I found this highly enjoyable and quite easy to drink. With plenty of fruit flavor, a lack of overt bitterness, and a recessed alcoholic presence, this was a likeable beer that became easier to drink as it warmed up!
Not a bad pour to this as the liquid was a somewhat dank and waxy apricot hue with some light seeping through around the edges. Enough head topped this off but that was probably more due to the age of this beer than anything else, as the lacing was quite thin and sparse throughout my session. Not a strong nose to this though there was enough stone fruit, lychee, wheat, and plum to (barely) pull me in. The taste was there this stood out as the dank fruit rind, strong pineapple feel, sticky peach, and tropical mouthfeel came through and held me until the end. The juice was here but if you wanted something bitter, this would not be your cup of tea! A dry malt presence and balanced mouthfeel made this stand out, even if it wasn't that impressive up-front...
Plenty of booze here but you wouldn't know it until you finished it off and felt a bit of warming take hold. While not a "juice bomb", the 0 IBU made this stand out from Trillium and Veil's other offerings, as well as American Imperial IPA's in general. If you want a juice bomb that has little carbonation and plenty of juicy notes to dwell on, you've found your match here. I enjoyed this and was impressed by how well it held up, and took a hold on me...

This beer is worth trying just to experience the intended mindscrew. That it's also an excellent example of a NEIPA is an awesome bonus.
