Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Making its return migration to New England, Big Bird remains one of our hoppiest beers ever. Drawing inspiration from our “small birds” by utilizing speciality grains and unique hop varieties, Big Bird has an amped profile worthy of a larger fowl. Pouring a noticeably cloudy yellow, this intensely aromatic Double IPA conjures up a tropical fruit cocktail nose of fresh pressed orange and ripe pineapple with a garnish of lemon and light spruce tip spice. Strong citrus flavors of key lime pie, mandarin orange, and tangy grapefruit pith lead into a creamy profile of kiwi flesh, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon with papaya. Medium bodied, Big Bird’s tropical sweetness on the front of the palate is balanced out on the finish by a soft herbal bitterness. Don’t sleep on this bird, it’s one for the books!

MALT: American 2-Row Barley, White Wheat, Dextrine Malt, Flaked Wheat, Valley Danko Rye, Valley Malt White Wheat Malt, Malted Oats, Dextrose

Pure OJ appearance. Just a shade darker, which doesn't gain it any less points. Head is pretty loose but leaves delicate rings. I can't knock this at all. When I pour a beer and go "oooh" that's an automatic 5. Bam.

Nose suggests a bit of cattyness, so I'm assuming some Mosaic and Azaca going on here. Some sweaty aromas, behind that some fresh grapefruit and grapefruit rinds, blueberry, berries, pineapple, a little bit of not-quite-ripe orange.

Soft profile overall, with a great balance of fruit and herbs. A lovely dance of grapefruit pith, papaya, pineapple, not-yet-ripe orange, tangelo, white grape, with a dash of thyme and a little rosemary on the finish. Nice bitter hoppy finish. Overall it comes of super soft with a nice bitter herbal profile supplemented by fruits of the southern Americas.

Feel is creamy, subtle carbonation, resiny finish. Really great.

Trillium so far has impressed the heck out of me. I can sense that this is probably not their best offering, but it's nothing to wag your head at. It's very tasty, and I could drink this all. day. long. Yep.

My first trip to Trillium to pick up a flat for a week-long family vacation on the Cape happened to coincide with the release of Big Bird, so I figured I should pick some up along with more traditional Trillium staples. Poured one tonight (less than a day after canning, at least according to the stamp on the can), and had two high-level reactions: (1) Love the spectrum of fruit aromas and flavors they worked into this beer. (2) Think Big Bird will benefit from a week or two of mellowing, as the extremely fresh product is quite green and astringent.

Look is a briny, cidery pale gold with only a finger of off-white head that dissipates quickly and laces hardly at all.

Smell is sharp and big, filled with orange, grapefruit, tropical fruit salad, lemon, grass clippings, tree sap, rye bread, and an almost Pinesol note (the aforementioned astringency). Very inviting but a little raw, as well. Probably my favorite aspect is the strong grape notes. Really unique and intoxicating.

Taste isn't quite as harsh but still a little green, but there is a wonderful breath of flavors. Papaya, dried mango, sweet pineapple, bitter and pithy citrus, a lot of pine and grass, big doses of white grape juice, and some multi-grain cereal. Some soft berry notes and a little green onion, and certainly plenty of dankness. Very tasty and bright.

Feel is silky but fairly light. There's an edge to each sip but I don't think it's the alcohol, more he greenness. The ABV is pretty well hidden.

Pours a turbid pale straw in color with a finger of dense white head. I love the aroma. Peach, candied pineapple, lime, citrus pith, something that seems close to white grape, and a bit of piney dankness. Tatse hits the same notes as the aroma but adds a touch of bitterness, alcohol, and maybe some yeast astringency but all these notes are restrained and help balance out the predominantly juicy character. Medium+ body with moderate carbonation. I love this beer, this experience reminds me strongly of why I fell in love with Trillium. It's big, intensely flavored, and has a delicious raw hoppyness that I love. I tend to prefer my beers super fresh but I'm curious to see how this one evolves over the next few weeks.

Pours bright yellow in color, hazy, with 1/3 inch head. Taste is lemon meringue, mango, and pine with peppery burn on the aftertaste. Medium-heavy bodied, sweet with light bitterness, moderate carbonation. Interesting, restrained, and complex at the same time. In the upper third of beers I have had from Trillium but not yet in the top ten.

CANNED ON 06/19/18.

Pours a slightly pale creamy yellow, with a nice half inch head of creamy foam and thin, weak lace.

The nose is really nice as it opens up, with a combination of sweet malt, papaya, and overripe pineapple. Potent and wonderful.

Trillium’s Imperials are the best you can get, IMO, with Monkish always rivaling closely. An awesome balance of pineapple, ripe mango, sweet malt, and booze. The hops give off a nice stinging bitterness and really rounds out the flavors well.

Sharp, medium carb, a super creamy body, and a sticky finish. Juicy, bold, boozy warmth, wonderful beer.

Taste: big lemon grass, citrus and pinaple followed by a piney finish
Feel: insably clean, medium body and light carbonation... finished semi dry... stupid easy to drink.

16 oz. can. Hazy pale orange. Smells of sweet pale malt, a hint of caramel, orange hops, and a zippy back end that's a little woodsy and limey. Taste has more of that zippy hop. Woodsy, more citrus, sweet tropical fruit. A little booze. Resiny finish. Medium heavy. Very nice, but big.
