Fireplace BananasFireplace Bananas
Notes: Friends who grill bananas together stay together: Monkish, Cloudwater, The Veil, and Other Half came for a visit and together we made a banana-rific beer!

Naturally, when friends have sleepovers and drinks, ideas flow… especially around a roaring fire. What do you roast in your fireplace? Bananas, obviously! And so the idea for Fireplace Bananas was born.

Since bananas add a relatively light flavor, every advanced banana product we could get our hands on (flame grilled, dehydrated chips, puree, dried & ground dried) went into this unique American Stout. The equivalent of 30,000 bananas generated about 25% of the fermentable sugars for this beer. That's about four bananas for every 750ml bottle! A nose of subtle smoke, ripe banana, and a hint of dark cacao lead into a palate of caramelized sugar, banana bread, molasses, and a charred chocolate flavor. Finishes with a rich sweetness and full mouthfeel, underpinned by a subtle bitterness.

HOPS: Columbus

MALT: Pale Malt, Beachwood Smoked Malt, Dextrine Malt, C-120, Malted Oats, Chocolate Malt, Black Malt, Munich Malt, C-80

Muddy dark brown with a fuzzy mocha blanket.

This is chocolate covered banana with a hoppy stout on the side. Having just had one of those Other Half Thai banana bombs, this is relatively balanced by comparison. Around two years after bottling, the banana is still present enough so as to have distinct definition, but other elements of the base beer are able to shine just fine and it's not overly pastry-fied.

Tangy, roasty and almost smoky, the medium thick body has a filling but light carbonation, finishing semi-dry.

On tap at the source.

Opaque black with a trace of yeasty haze. Minimal head or lacing. Banana skins and banana with chocolate and char in the nose. The pithy peels are a bit detracting. Full bodied with a chewy mouthfeel. Chocolate with some faintly burnt bananas on the palate. Hints of coffee and smoke follow through. Finishes with some lingering banana pith and charred bakers chocolate.

Just not the best mix of burnt banana peels with stout here.

Tap at the brewery
Nice creamy thick head, tons of sticky lacing, dark murky chestnut swamp water

Nose started all smoke, then the smoke fades into caramelized bananas, little hazelnut thing, vegetative dark molasses thing, tart like thing,

Taste starts with smoke and bananas, smoked charred wood, caramelized bananas, big vegetal molasses thing again, candy syrup, caramel notes, brown sugar and raw vegetal molasses, little bitterness on the back end, sticky finish, more bananas and smoke almost iodine smoke.

Mouth is med to a bit fuller bod, creamy but lush, lighter but decent carb

Overall very unique and fun, thankfully plenty of banana but a nice caramelized banana, bitterness is a little rough too, finish in general was not great, otherwise a pretty nice beer

Enjoyed at the brewery.

A - Poured into a standard tulip a silty murky chestnut hue with a creamy head that fades to leave creamy lacing.

S - Aromas of charred vegetative, smoke riddled bananas, roasted banana bread. Faint chocolate.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with big char notes. Charred wood smoke, light chocolate. The initial taste is super vegetative until giving way to huge banana notes. Sweet, slightly over ripe bananas. Finish is a bit bitter.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, little creamy, excellent body.

O - Overall this was a super unique beer. Excellent banana note, the bitterness on the finish is super distracting though.

A very prominent collaboration, a pretty hyped up stout but curious to try this bananas beer.

Pours a deep brown color, some nice tan head with minimal lace retention.

The nose on this is very ‘Belgiany’. Definitely getting banana, but it’s accompanied by by some bitter molasses and bready qualities.

Lots of banana, but also again it has a distinct bready quality and a yeasty backbone. It finishes bitter, some distinguishable roasty coffee and hints of dark chocolate.

Full bodied, not too sticky, and finishes very smooth. Great stout body.

750ml bottle

Pours cloudy opaque dark brown with a dissipating light brown foam head. Smells like a bunch of bananas, fresh, dried, all kinds of banana, banana bread, mild smoke, cherry, pineapple, dark caramel, toffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, brown sugar, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like a bunch of bananas, cherry, pineapple, smoky roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark caramel, toffee, dark fruit, molasses, brown sugar, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-full bodied, creamy slick with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a really nice and interesting imperial stout with bananas.

Very unique beer. Poured a nice 2 finger head, and looks like puréed banana bread. This beer is very thick with a velvety smooth feel. Smell is straight chocolate dipped bananas. I was hoping for more in the flavor. The banana smell doesn’t really translate as well in flavor, and the smoke is absolutely there. It’s not at all a bad beer, it’s very good in fact. I just wanted a little more from it.
