Notes: Genuine New Englanders are the type of people who are brave enough to take on a long, snowy shoveling session and lighthearted enough to crack a beer in their lawn chair afterwards. This new Double IPA is brewed for those True Englanders. For this beer, we used the new Sabro Hop from the Pacific Northwest.

Pouring a hazy golden yellow, True Englander swirls unique aromatics of coconut, ripe pineapple, white lily, and stone fruit. Full flavored tropical tones of piña coladas, lychee and key lime pie grace the palate underpinned by fresh tangerine, papaya and white nectarine. Medium bodied with a luscious and creamy mouthfeel, True Englander has a balanced and smooth finish.

16oz can

Pours a finger of white head into a whiskey snifter. Retention is average, maybe a little above. A little soapy looking. Body is orange juice. Looks fine.

Nose is primarily citrus rind up front. Very small notes of earthy hops. The nose in the can is extremely spicy hops, much better. Ultimately I'm reviewing out of the glass, which is a fine nose, but nothing special.

Flavor follows pretty close suit to the nose, citrus. Very clean, smooth, nothing wrong here, but somewhat one dimensional. It’s refreshing and tasty though, I'll be generous and give it a 4.

Mouthfeel does a lot of work, this is very silky and smooth, while also being bright and very effervescent. Body carries a good amount of weight to it. Carbonation is medium. Bitterness is on the lower end. Not sweet, not dry, well balanced. Some hop trub burn. Wonderful mouthfeel.

Drinkability is very high. The flavor is nothing to write home about, but the mouthfeel really brings it together.

The appearance turned out mediocre, lacing was very patchy.

Overall this beer gets its points from drinkability, refreshment, and its general feel. All and all it's a pretty nice beer.

So here we have a new DIPA from Trillium. This one using a new hop called Sabro. I have read a lot on different social media forums. The greatest was something to the effect of...I have read some reviews of the new hop, and I am a bit worried. (Not quote worthy)
Why would you be worried? What endeavor has ever grown and advanced, by staying the same? It would be awesome if Trillium put out a new beer that tasted like all of the others, and everyone would go, "DUDE!"
This beer highlights a new hop, and does it well. I get the coconut/pineapple/tropical note, and the sweetness/balance. I love how this brewery makes the effort in doing so, highlighting a newer hop varietal.
Don't be scared, hop heads. Just admire that your favorite brewery is leading you away from the mosaic/citra 2017/18, into a new frontier. If you have trouble climbing up, we'll drop a rope. The new is exciting, not something to be feared.

Canned 2 days ago.

L -- Opaque orange body with two fingers of off-white head produced with moderate pour. Better retention and lacing than usual with Trillium
S -- Orange/grapefruit/lime zest, thyme, basil, oregano, lemongrass, lemon sorbet, vanilla, white grape, mango, sweet floral
T -- Much more tropical than the aromas suggest. Mango puree, juicy guava, papaya, white peach, Jasmine, coconut
F -- Slightly dryer than most Trillium DIPAs, which is nice. Medium mouthfeel, medium+ carb.
O -- I dig this newfangled Sabro hop.

EDIT (12/13/2019):
I love sabro even more than I remember. The coconut, pina colada, fresh garden herb, honeydew melon character is just awesome and super refreshing. Head retention and lacing are still quite good and the mouthfeel feels softer than last year

Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass hard to tell when it was canned but within 4 weeks for sure. Pours a hazy orange with a a finger plus sticky slightly off white head that leaves loads of thick webs of lace yielding excellent retention. 4.75 Beautiful

Smell ripe cantaloupe, peach, papaya, mandarin, pineapple, and apricot. 4.5 Awesome

Taste follows melon, papaya, peach, tangerine, pineapple, and apricot. 4.5 Excellent

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, soft gentle carbonation, sticky not dry, and at 8.2% really easy drinking. 4.75 Incredible

Overall you call a beer a New Englander you better bring your A game and they really did. This stuff is really tasty and special. 4.5

Tall can....1/21/19

Typical heavily hazed Trillium look, leaving nice looking froth n lace behind on the glass.

Pungent tropical juicy fruit sweetness on the sniff.

Loaded with ripe pineapple, orange, lemon/lime juice goodness...Delicious, complex, top quality NEDIPA...great creation in brewing...go get some..easily one of my favorite TBC brews.

Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA
Served in a snifter

Milky, yellow ochre appearance. The hazy liquid was topped by a frothy, near finger-tall crown that quickly dissolved. A thin collar encircled the liquid, but it too was gone relatively fast. Patchy streaks and dots of lacing trickled down the glass.

The aroma was insanely fruity and exotic. Ripe peach notes dominated. Super fresh and punchy. Peach schnapps came to mind. Maybe some peach candy rings too. Tropical fruits were also apparent. Loads of mango and pineapple. Bit of lactose-like sweetness and milkiness. I can see how some reviewers made the comparison to a piña colada.

The flavor profile was just as stellar as the nose. Huge peach presence initially. Tons of ripe mango too. Big juicy, freshly squeezed orange notes were apparent in the center. Some pineapple as well. More peach on the back end. Sweet but not excessively so. Slightly boozy. Again, peach schnapps came to mind. Zesty tangerine notes and some rind-like pith appeared after the swallow. Hint of bitterness. Perfectly balanced.

Outstanding creamy, fluffy mouthfeel. Super smooth and medium-full bodied for the style. The liquid contained a fine, frothy, tongue blanketing effervescence.

While I approach every new Trillium hoppy beer with a bit of skepticism and ask myself, “How much better/different/notable could this beer truly be?”, I am continually amazed by how they manage to up their game. True New Englander features the newly bred Sabro hop varietal, which lends a unique tropical fruitiness and milky sweetness that is absolutely delicious. All things considered, this might be my favorite hoppy Trillium beer to date.

Pours hazy, orange-gold in color with 1/2 inch head. Tastes like dry pina colada, pineapple, coconut, dry orange juice. Medium heavy bodied, moderate carbonation, and slightly bitter. Delicious. Best Trillium beer I have had in a while. Love the Sabro hop and the coconut taste. Glad I picked up a full four pack.

On tap at Trillium Brewing Company in Boston, MA.

This one pours your expected shade of murky orange, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

On the nose, this is a pineapple bomb, with mango, some lemon/lime, and a touch of grassiness.

This is absolutely pure juice, but it tastes excellent. Pineapple is the dominant characteristic here, with stone fruit and loads of citrus as well, and just the slightest hint of bitterness on the finish.

This is crisp and juicy, with a great level of drinkability.

This isn't super different from most Trillium IPAs, but like most Trillium IPAs - it's very delicious.
