Barrel-Aged Chocolate Covered Peanut BrittleBarrel-Aged Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle
Notes: Pouring a viscous, jet black with a mocha-tinged foam cap, a nose highlighted by aromas of roasted peanuts, creamy milk chocolate, and bourbon-soaked oak fill the room. On the palate, the complexity of the base beer shows itself, contributing notes of brown sugar, thick fudge, and drizzled caramel. Remarkably full-bodied, Barrel-Aged Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle coats the palate in a gentle sweetness, finishing with just enough bitterness to keep us reaching for the next sip.

A - Dark brown pour, no lacing, no carbonation.

S - Light chocolate char, cacao nibs, chocolate roast, and light alcohol.

T - Peanut shows up up front and midway through, chocolate char, toasted cacao nibs, alcohol, vanilla, and nicely balanced on the back side.

M - Thick, syrupy, and lip smacking sticky. Some warming in the back of the throat.

O - This is a fantastic Stout. Highly recommended.

Drank from a 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle purchased at Trillium Brewing Company, Boston, MA

Served in a tulip

The beer poured viscous and completely pitch black. Dark as dark could be. The body was topped by a thin, fizzy, caramel colored film that dissolved almost instantly. The resulting liquid had a glossy sheen to it and reminded me of used motor oil.

The peanut brittle presence came through big time in the aroma. In most of the peanut-infused beers I have sampled prior to this one, the peanut notes seemed either phony or “off.” Here, however, they in were really pure and authentic. Nice cocoa presence as well. Milk chocolate perhaps. Bit of caramel and/or toffee. Fresh vanilla bean notes were apparent too. Touch of boozy bourbon. Overall, really interesting and complex.

The flavor profile was also very impressive. Super malty and robust up front. Nice melding of roasted and caramel malt notes. Peanut brittle kicked in next. The peanut presence was more subtle here than it was in the nose, but it was still quite punchy and natural tasting. Subtle cocoa notes were detectable. Bit of vanilla too. Boozy bourbon notes kicked in hard as the beer moved along the palate and crescendoed in the finish. More booze, sweetness and lingering roast after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was also fantastic. Full bodied for the style. Super creamy and slick on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, subtle carbonation that worked perfectly for an intense stout such as this one.

Barrel-Aged Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle is the best peanut-infused beer I have ever tried. This was a monster of a stout and drank surprisingly easy given the super high ABV.

Bottle. Not much head. Dark brown, black color.

Liquid Reece’s peanut butter cups. Normally the peanut flavor is nutty, overly roasted, or artificial. This is great. Milk chocolate and peanut butter. Bourbon and oak. Thick, rich, filling. Light roast. This is pretty great.
