Pot & KettlePot & Kettle

Brewed by:
Trillium Brewing Company
Massachusetts, United States

Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our signature porter, brewed with oats, has a soft, velvety mouthfeel with layers of chocolate and roasted malt on the palate. The ominously black appearance belies this porter's approachability; Pot & Kettle is satisfyingly smooth and nourishing, but never lumbering or heavy. While not sweet, dark fruit notes, such as cherries, dates, and raisins, reveal themselves as the beer warms.

MALT: American 2-row, Rolled Oats, Pale Chocolate, Black (Patent), Carafa III, Caramunich, C-120, C-80

HOPS: Columbus

A-Pours close to black. Head is a big, dense clump of gooey foam. Lots and lots of thick lacing. Great looking Porter.

S-Smells of charred and burnt malt. Some chalkiness. Burnt coffee and oats. Bitter dark chocolate. Very roasty, very burnt.

T-Charred maltiness, super-bitter powdered cocoa. Black coffee. Light chalk. A sweetness arises as the beer warms. It's definitely coercive and bold, which I enjoy.

M-Great body. Mellowed carbonation. Bitter. Alcohol is light. Very drinkable. Went through a mini-growler far too quickly.

O/D-I enjoyed how this was a more assertive Porter. It wasn't just another exceedingly sweet take on the style. It was very unique and I would love to try the barrel aged version if they do it again.

Deep, Roasty, Inviting, Level

A dreamy palate of coffee and chocolate from the roasted malts, delicate caressing smoothness is a well played by the oats. Some sweetness unveils both dark sugars and black currants. Chewy medium body shows off its girth, big perhaps but still very drinkable. A world class brew to say the least, while the beer geeks are clamoring for their hop ladened beer which are great though this is a spectacular run at a dark style and bringing it to a world class level.

Definitely one of the best beers I've ever had, and probably my favorite porter. A great balance of malty sweetness and dark roasted flavors, along with an incredibly smooth mouthfeel and a really inviting, sweet aroma. Just fantastic.

Appearance: Awesome. Opaque black, with a little bit of light showing through a deep brown at the bottom of my mug. A thin vanilla-colored head that stuck around pretty well, especially for a growler pour

Smell: Super inviting. Very sweet, obvious notes of chocolate and/or coffee.

Taste: Perfectly balanced between sweet roasted malts and more bitter, smoky flavors. A definite kick of alcohol in the finish (in a good way)

Mouthfeel: Smooth. Really, really easy to drink for a medium-high ABV dark beer.

A lot going on here. Pours super dark. Not particularly strong on the nose. Multiple favors with a little bitterness in the end. Not super heavy, so a porter I could drink all day. Me like.

Service: Bottle
Bottled on: Oct-17-2015 (Consumed: Dec-19-2015)

Pours a black as pitch with a uniform little two-finger dollop of brown head that sticks at half a finger then a heavy film. Very good retention; sheets of sticky lacing. (4)

Creamy spiced chocolate. Cocoa, soft/creamy oatmeal backbone, caramel, cinnamon, leather. (4.25)

Mocha dark fruits. Dark fruits and some bitter chocolate with a creamy coffee feel to the finish there is a light, bright cherry juice hint that comes through in the middle that is really something. (4.25)

Velvet with a lingering roast character on the palate, medium+ body with soft carbonation. (4.25)

Excellent porter.
This is a beer that I have been hankering for for the past couple years as I saw more and more people talking up Trillium. I am really glad to have gotten to try it.
A rich, smooth porter that feels exactly like it should (this is one of my most important factors when drinking one of my favorite styles). Everything is as it should be, balanced and delicious. The best and most unexpected part of this beer is the train-lights-in-a-tunnel of light roast fruity character in the mouth. Almost thin but the oatmeal helps fatten it up. Great beers, the roast flavors are really tight and there is a great really fruity malt flavor that comes off light and juicy. Very nice. You're the man, KC.
This is a great beer. I will seek this one out in the future for sure. (4.5)

A dark brown beer with some red to it. A good-sized tan head that dissipated quickly.
Dark roasted malt aroma. Oatmeal.
Really nice coffee taste, Strong dark coffee,. Oatmeal. A hint of chocolate.
Medium-bodied, very smooth.

Pours a dark brown. Nice porter that is a great mix of rich dark chocolate and sweet milk chocolate. Little bit of hops and vanilla. A well done example of the style.
