750 mL bottle. Pours a deep reddish purple. Light purple head. Looks spectacular. Smells of lots of currant, oak, and some yogurt acidity. Tastes of rich currant up front, but the sourness immediately take over. Oak and sourness with just a slight semblance of beer in the middle. Red wine builds throughout and culminates in the finish. Well carbonated. Strong sourness, but doesn’t overwhelm. Tastes very big, but I was stunned by the 11% alcohol. This has a remarkable fruit and wine flavor, but it’s just a little bit difficult to drink.

This was an amazing finish to our tasting that included many other top notch beers. Im shocked this isnt rated higher honestly. We drank this after several stouts, and its a huge beer, but was just what the doctor ordered

It smells sour and of Cabernet, lots of dark fruit on the nose. Taste is very similar, huge wine barrel character with an enormous body and quite sour. Very wine-esque, like they added beer to a barrel with 20% dark Cabernet left in it.

On tap at Lord Hobo "sour tap takeover".

Brownish amber with minimal head. Roast, chocolate, and dark fruit in the nose. Oily and a bit chewy. Roast, raisins, and some tart fruit on the palate.

Not all that complex and the heavy roast and chocolate are not really my thing. Probably a good candidate for cellaring.

Appearance: It has a nice dark amber color to it. It has a nice beige head that dies down moderately and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of tart fruit, plums, raisins cherries, light chocolate and some funk.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some tart dark fruits, some roastiness, faint chocolate, oak and light funk.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/med carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.

Poured from 375 ml bottle that I picked up during Trillium's anniversary week.

A: Pours a very dark purple with a 2 finger off white head that settled fairly quickly to a small ring around the edge. Little if no lacing to be found.

S: Aroma is dominated by tart fruit mixed with yeast esters. Plum, currants, dates.

T: Follows the nose fairly close, but I also pick up a bit on the oak notes. I feel like there should be some sweetness coming from the roasted malts, but they are overpowered by the tartness. The black currants are shining through.

M: Medium body with an almost prickly carbonation.

O: Interesting brew. As a wild ale or sour, I think it is hugely successful. As a Belgian dark strong ale, it misses the mark somewhat. I badly wanted some sweetness to offset some of the tart fruits...

The beer pours very little head. The head is a creamy and dark cocoa tan color with notes of black. The beer itself is an opaque dark purple color with notes of black. The shade is close to nightshade and dark plum. The smell has nice tart and dark fruit notes as well as what smells like watermelon. There also appear to be slight hints of chocolate sweetness alongside some notes of roasted malt. The taste is similar to the smell but with a stronger funk note to it. The funk is fairly tarty but not too tarty. There are also hints of milk chocolate with a bit of malt and hints of dark fruits. The alcohol also makes a slight presence but is very well hidden by the tart. A hint of vanilla and oak are also there but is barely noticeable. The mouthfeel is fairly heavy bodied but surprisingly light. The carbonation is biting and goes well with the various flavor notes. Overall, a fairly good beer and I hope that it comes out again but in greater quantity.

A-Pours a dark brown. Nearly no head. What are you?

S-I get some mild tartness mixed with some relative sweetness. As the previous reviewer stated, I also am reminded of cola.

T-I'd enjoy a bit more sour/tart here. Its a lingering nuance. It has some Porter and Belgian dark qualities. Also there is some dark fruits.

M-Now seeing how high the ABV is, I am surprised by its rather modest body.

O/D-Interesting but it could use a bit more 'funkification'. Definitely an interesting cup of hooch.

The beer pours a muddy, dark brown with caramel and molasses highlights. A nice and loud head of tiny, tan bubbles form a head and then fizzle away to nothing on the glass leaving a tiny island of scrim and a very thin rim of bubbles. In body, the beer is dark, and almost black ruby colored in the light. No particles seem to be present in the body, but it is a little too dark to know for sure. Carbonation bubbles can just barely be glimpsed through the glass, peppering the head at a nice rate. When swirled, the beer leaves thin and drizzly legs of alcohol on the sides of the glass. On the nose, the beer smells of a fruity funk mixed with cola sweetness and a touch of raisins. Cherry coke comes to mind, with splashes of light pineapple and faint lemon/lime. Fainter still is the malt presence, but it gives a soft, brown sugar sense to the beer, while syrupy alcohol lurks beneath the entire scent. As it warms, chocolate and light French roast coffee can also be detected in the scent. On the tongue, the beer tastes tart with fruity acidity, which mellows into tannic bitters with a touch of herbal bitters and a strong, malt and yeast sweetness that is reminiscent of a quad. Booze, much like in the smell, lurks beneath everything but never really shows its ugly head, which speaks wonders for this beer’s balance. Dry, bitter roast malt sits pleasantly in the aftertaste. Wow. The beer feels on the plus side of medium in body, with a sharp and prickly carbonation that reminds me of drinking coke. Smooth, and gently oily in mouthfeel, the beer oozes over the tongue with subtle grace. The mouth is left sticky on the sides of the cheeks, like a wild ale often does, yet roasted dry on the tongue, like after a good dry porter. In flavor, the beer begins as tart funk, moving from sweet cherry, to candied watermelon, to light pineapple, to malic green apple, and back to sweet cherry. This slowly builds into a long and luxurious finish of tannic, oaky wood, vanilla, raisins, and a green tea-like funk. At the final explosion of flavor, the tongue is blanketed is creamy, roasted chocolate and smooth coffee. The tart cherry flavor lasts along the middle of the tongue throughout the entire taste, but the aftertaste is all about the roasted malts chocolate and coffee nuances. The funk is not huge in this beer, instead it is just one part of its complex flavor profile. This beer is a wild ale, a stout, and a quad all mixed into one. This beer is a beautiful blend of styles, with artful nuances coming through. The funk is not quite as pronounced as I was first hoping it would be, but honestly, I like it more this way. This beer is about delicate balance and restraint between three very dominant flavor profiles, and it pulls this off wonderfully. I do wish the nose was a little more nuanced and stronger, but it still is pretty damn good. This is a perfect beer to be sipped as the months grow colder and the days shorter. I would love to have one of these for Christmas dessert, and I cannot wait to see the variations that Trillium plans to release of this beer. The brewery said they were going to bottle this later in the fall, and that their bottling line was being looked at today, and all I can say is please hurry up and do that! This beer is great.
