Brown in color with a slightly reddish tinge. A small showing of off white small tightly knit carbonation bubbles on top and a good steady show of them within the body. The aroma is mainly of whiskey, but I also get a lot of dark barley. The taste is deep with rich whiskey flavor, caramel, and oak. There's a lack of complexity for such a big brew. The fade is strongly that of whiskey, but fades quickly. You get a dryness and a warmth from the alcohol after the finish. I was hoping for more especially at that price.

Poured from a bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Nearly clear copper mahogany pour. 1 figner of white head... thin rim of lacing.

S: Caramel and dark sugars... mild whiskey and booze. Dark fruit.

T/F: Sweet and rich... malty as heck. Caramel and toffee... raisin, fig, and plum. The whiskey is present but subdued... blending into the background with a little bit of vanilla and oak. Complex and delicious. Medium bodied... sticky on the tongue. The finish is sticky and sweet like an old time dessert.

O: A delicious rye whiskey aged Barleywine. Drinks like a dessert... perfect for cold weather and sitting by the fire. This one warms and pleases.

Poured out a dark burgundy color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled boozy. SO boozy. Powerful rye taste. Almost like actual whiskey but sweeter and less alcohol burn.

Pours a hazy, brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of liquor, alcohol, sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, slight hop, and slight rye. Fits the style of an American Barleywine. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of liquor, roasted malt, sweet malt, hops, hint of rye, and slight alcohol. Overall, good aroma, feel, body, and blend.

Thanks to rudzud for this one.

Pours a light fizzy head, murky dark copper brown color.

Nose sweet syrupy malt, caramel candy molasses, apple and dried nuts, all candied, with nice rye spicy note, etc. Touch faint whisky.

Taste starts with candy, lots of caramel toffee candy, juicy malt, little syrupy, etc, with mild sweetness and some booze warmth. Nice barrel notes, vanilla barrel, nice whisky and hot malty booze, with light fruity rye, smooth mellow with a bit of booze but not nearly 12%, little sherry like fruity boozy candy barrel, etc.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, nice fluffy carb, little booze warmth.

Overall quite nice, grassy winter beer.

Deep amber color. Weak head and no retention or lacing. Wonderful, rich, dark malt aroma with nuts, maple wood and whiskey. Flavor is overly sweet and becomes sweeter as it warms. Malt, oak and rye flavor is balanced, just overly sweet and syrupy. Feel of sticky syrup. Low carbonation.

Shared with JLindros and threelions.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice clear caramel hue with a thin halo and light wisps,

S - Aromas of big toffee and caramel, sweet malts, light rye, not much whiskey at all.

T - Taste is caramel and light chocolate, loads of caramel, the rye is nice and fruity not spicy, the whiskey notes are really pleasant, sweet and mellow quite balanced instead of being spicy or assertive. Tasty.

M - Mouthfeel is pleasant, smooth, alcohol hidden well.

O - Overall this beer was good, alcohol hidden well. Not what I was expecting but pleasant.

this is huge beer, made in the rye on rye fashion, which i really dig. these guys do some absurd barrel aged strong ales, and this is another one of those. i always think its crazy how much templeton rye specifically comes through in beers, its a solid rye and quite distinct, but its like jim beam or wild turkey on the lower quality end, you taste them specifically, and templeton is like that in a good way, and its woody earthy goodness is on great display here. the base beer is nice even without the barrel too though, deep hazy amber in color with a ton of body and a distinctive rye malt profile. its sweet for sure, toffee and honey notes to it, but there is also a dried fruitiness, raisin and maybe cherry, as well as a more desserty aspect, creme brulee and brown sugar. some spice to the rye malt, but enough sugar that its not harsh at all, and the oak permeates pretty well too. the booze is only really a factor when this comes up to temperature, and even then its somewhat tame for what this is. this is a cool beer, well made and nicely aged. more carbonation and a little less residual sugar would improve it considerable for me, but i thought they did a fine job with this. these guys do great work with these strong ales!
