Henniker Brewing Co. "King Misanthrope"
$6.50 / tulip glass on tap @ Bainbridge Street Barrel House, Philadelphia, PA on 17 February 2019

Notes: "aged on house toasted maple wood cured w/ American whiskey from Flag Hill". Not quite as "black" as some Imperial stouts, more of a very dark chestnut/mahogany brown. Short khaki colored head. Limited head retention but better lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, roastiness, and a touch of alcohol. The flavor follows with some additional cocoa, medium caramel, oak, some whiskey, some drying alcohol, and a hint of vanilla. It's malty but it finishes mainly dry with some lightly ashen roastiness lingering. Interesting beer that's not quite what you expect from an Imperial stout but whiskey doesn't seem to have really done a whole lot for it and it just doesn't have that je ne sais quoi that would elevate it to world class.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch tan head over a very dark brown body with some sticky lacing. Nose of chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, oak, and slight whiskey. Flavors mirror aromas nicely with milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, and whiskey in the forefront and vanilla and caramel in there as well. Really nice chewy feel and overall a beauty of a stout right here. Cheers to Henniker!

Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a nice thick dark brown in the pour but yielded more of a black color in nature as it was held up to the light. Off white foamy head slid off at a fairly easy going sort of pace. Lots of messy lace ran around the glass fairly nice.
The aroma wielded a fine meshing of thick sweet milk chocolate, fudge-like particles, sweet woody barrel, slight vanilla, light toasted nuttiness, and a slight whiskey sweetness on the back end.
The flavor was moderately sweet with an ample toastiness and mild roast leading on into a slight sticky milk chocolatey to sweet woody-like aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt a bit lower than expected, but I wasn't bothered by that as there still seemed to be enough to stifle any kind of possible cloying nature that could have occurred. ABV felt about on par.
Overall, I have not always been a fan of this brewery, but this one, holy crap and a half - where did this come from? Their break through beer? Quite possibly. Looking forward to find more bottles of this for possible aging.

Having a 2017 vintage 22oz bomber, purchased at The Beer Store Nashua for $10.00. Current version is 10.0% ABV.

My Smutty snifter is brimming with a deep, dark chestnut brew. The head is creamy and tan, covering the liquid for a short spell before receding. A decent amount of foam congregates around the rim, with decent lacing left behind. The aroma is replete with large doses of dark choco, roasty coffee and mocha. This one is very smooth; the body is medium to medium-plus, and the bier has a satiny glide down the gullet.

Flavor also possesses a healthy amount of dark, bitter choco and roasty notes. There's also a noticeable maple aspect to this, with some caramel, toffee and vanilla mixed in. And we're not yet finished! Next to be enjoyed on the palate are some smoky notes, light traces of whiskey, and some earthy, tobacco-like action in the finish. Mmmm, this is one damn tasty RIS! Might have to get more and TRY to age some... Prosit!!

Many thanks to SawDog505 for this bottle.

A - Pitch black pour with very thin lacing and little carbonation. Viscous and sticky on the sides of the glass when the beer is swirled.

S - Dark chocolate roast, some smokiness, woody, and light char.

T - Smokey presence, light bourbon, dark roasted chocolate with some burnt grain quality, light traces of vanilla.

M - Heavy medium body and borderline full bodied, silky texture.

O - The ABV in this beer is superbly hidden and the smoky char helps make it something special. Really enjoyed. Seek out.
