I am trying this beer off the tapper at the brewery as part of a six sample flight. It poured an opaque dark with ecru ring head that is leaving some lace. The scent had maple and vanilla notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to sip with semi sweet dark chocolate malt base with vanilla, maple, and subtle roast presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Appearance: Pours obsidian with a three finger beige head; decent retention and some clumpy lacing
Smell: Smoky maple, Whiskey, fig, tobacco and some char
Taste: Smoked maple forward with fig, Whiskey and tobacco emerging; more Whiskey, after the swallow, with some hops and char developing in the finish
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation
Overall: Really enjoyable; the Whiskey tastes more like Rye than Bourbon so I took a peek at the Flag Hill website and noted that they produced both a Rye and a Bourbon so I am intrigued by this
Thanks, Davl22, for the opportunity

Taster at brewery. Dark brown pour, spotty beige head. Sweet, roasty aroma. Taste is roasty, chocolate, coffee, sweet and mild bitterness. Woody notes, smooth.

A bit of a departure from my recent steady diet of Lagers & especially Pilsners, but when I noticed a slight pooch on the CAN's lid, I immediately threw it into the reefer to settle. I am using this as a premature CANebration as the PGH Pirates are poised to finally win a game after a five-game skid. It's a CANQuest (tm) thing.
From the CAN: "Russian Imperial Stout Aged on Whiskey Cured Maple Wood"; "Misanthrope - A person who dislikes humankind & avoids society."; "Bold, dark, strong, and unapologetic. King Misanthrope is our Russian Imperial Stout aged on house-toasted maple wood cured with American whiskey from Flag Hill Distillery in Lee, NH. Look for notes of baker’s chocolate, coffee, maple, charred wood, & whiskey. The king doesn't care about your opinion or Untappd score, just let him drink his beer and get out of his face."
I Crack!ed the King across his face & beCAN a slow, steady, C-Line Glug as his vent remained agape. The first ocCANurrance was the pseudo-cascade that eventually formed two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-brown head with rather limited retention. Bye! Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), admitting no one & no light across the moat & into the castle. Fair dinkum, king! I have my own ways. Nose smelled like the dough for the makings of a really rich, whiskey-infused brownie! This was no playin' around! Def baker's chocolate, coffee & charred wood. The whiskey made it seem like we were imbibing in the charred ruins of someone's fire-destroyed home! Phew. Mouthfeel was big, full & thick, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue! I allowed it to just kind of roll around as I tried to get my wits about me. I was sweating profusely & this beer had a good bit to do with it. The smoky baker's chocolatiness slowly gave way to coffee, followed by an explosion of whiskey! Phew. My choice in whiskey is Rye, but this was neither Rye nor Scotch. Instead, it was a mellow flavor, def not Bourbon, either. It was smoooooooth, but it definitely brought some heat. I really do not remember the first time that I imbibed of whiskey, but it had to have been in high school. I never developed a taste for it before the recent resurgence of Rye, but I remember talking about using it as an adjunct in cooking in high school. I mention this since it was like drinking a liquefied brownie or a chocolate chip cookie, infused with whiskey. Phew. I was now sweating like I was in a sauna. I came back to Lagers/Pilsners after a Stout binge that really did me no favors! This was not doing me any favors, either, as I started to acquire a port list. A port list as opposed to a Port List & I was beginning to wonder if I would keel over as a result. Phew! Finish was hot, chocolaty, def alcoholic & NOT for the faint of heart! YMMV.

Henniker Brewing Co. "King Misanthrope"
$6.50 / tulip glass on tap @ Bainbridge Street Barrel House, Philadelphia, PA on 17 February 2019
Notes: "aged on house toasted maple wood cured w/ American whiskey from Flag Hill". Not quite as "black" as some Imperial stouts, more of a very dark chestnut/mahogany brown. Short khaki colored head. Limited head retention but better lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, roastiness, and a touch of alcohol. The flavor follows with some additional cocoa, medium caramel, oak, some whiskey, some drying alcohol, and a hint of vanilla. It's malty but it finishes mainly dry with some lightly ashen roastiness lingering. Interesting beer that's not quite what you expect from an Imperial stout but whiskey doesn't seem to have really done a whole lot for it and it just doesn't have that je ne sais quoi that would elevate it to world class.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch tan head over a very dark brown body with some sticky lacing. Nose of chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, oak, and slight whiskey. Flavors mirror aromas nicely with milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, and whiskey in the forefront and vanilla and caramel in there as well. Really nice chewy feel and overall a beauty of a stout right here. Cheers to Henniker!
