Sample at the Santa Clarita location. This beer pours a dark brown-amber color with a thin beige head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing. Pale malt, smoke and mild hops in the nose. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Flavors of smoked malt, caramel and touches of coffee and chocolate. The finish is smoky and leaves an earthy malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

i think this beer is way better than its ratings, sure its light in body and alcohol and heft for the style, we all like them big i know, but this almost turns the style into a session beer, and i think there is a place for that, i actually really enjoyed this one once i accepted it as a lighter take on the style. its copper in color with some brown hues and a nice tanish head on it with fine retention. good clarity here too. the nose is pretty simple as they go, amber malts, honey, chestnut, euro type ale yeast, some cool nuttiness and mild sweetness, but nothing overly complex, which is true of the flavor as well. nothing earthy here, no peat or smoke or even darker malts that these sometimes have, but a nice caramelized grain profile and a neat length to it, kind of baked and warming, hearty for being so low in alcohol. toffee and black tea and crystal malt through the finish. perhaps not the most compelling take on the style i have ever seen, but its a lot better than its ratings here. a more than serviceable glass of ale...

March 31st, 2015 - Scottish Ale in name, the McGarvey's tastes a great deal more like a low ABV amber. Expecting heavy scents and dripping malty flavors, the aroma is more like a sweet toast, alongside some coffee beans. Where it really suffers is in the flavor, which is muted, though shows off some caramel and a little smokiness. But the flavor is a little flat, with only the mouthfeel any flatter.
