I stopped by the Red Oak Pub before a Charlie Daniels concert based on my research on Beer Advocate. I got there about six o'clock on a Friday evening. I walked in, and it had the charm of a chain restaurant. My friend and I bellied up to the U-shaped bar. They had a pretty good representation of craft beer with local beers being an option. I tried my first Buckeye Lake and Weasel Boy beers. They also had Lake Erie Monster and Headhunter IPA. Two excellent choices. I don't recall any of the other beers, but there were probably 12-15 beers on tap.

There were two bartenders on duty and were very attentive for as busy as they were. The menu had a little of everything, but the burgers seemed to be the specialty. My friend chose a peanut butter burger, and I chose Ryan's Rise and Shine burger. This burger used waffles with maple syrup for the bun and consisted of a burger topped with bacon and a sunny side up egg. It was very tasty. The sweet and salty characteristics worked wonderfully together. I had to use a knife and fork to eat it. My friend enjoyed her burger as well.

I spoke with some regulars who pointed out the owner. They asked if we had met him yet which we hadn't. They said we would by the end of the evening. As the previous reviewer noted, the owner must be friendly and engaged. We never got the opportunity to meet him though.

Overall, it was a positive experience. The food was good. The beer selection was above average, and it was a clean place with a good vibe. I would say it is one of your better choices in the area. If I ever make it back to Newark I would go there again.

I have been here several times and it has been a positive experience each time. The food tastes fresh and they make their own dressings and sauces. Everything I have tried has been very good.

They have several craft beers on tap and promote several of the local smaller breweries, like Buckeye Lake Brewery, Weasel Boy Brewing and Homestead Beer Co. Other taps rotate with various styles from a mix of breweries. They also have several of the usual mainstream selections on draft. There is also a selection of bottled craft beer if you can't find something you like on draft.

The owner is often in the pub and visits the tables introducing himself, verifying all is good and socializing for a little while. A nice touch!
