A: caramel; good clarity. Thin tan head; good retention to even layer. Laced in wide wavy rings.

S: Citrus, caramel and toffee.

T: Like the nose with some fruity notes and floral hop character. Evenly bitter balancing finish.

M: Medium body. Low to moderate carbonation. Easy on the palate; smooth to a building bitter finish.

O: easy drinking. Good balance.

I appreciate what these guys are doing here. all red ales, which to me are the most underwhelming genre in American craft brewing to date, so theres plenty of directions to go in with this. this is their basic red, plain and simple. it pours a lighter more brown than red color, clear, with a really nice fluffy head in the tan spectrum, great retention. the nose is only a little sweet, theres some peppery rye in here, and a hint of vanilla and honey. the flavor is unique for a basic red, very little hops happening, but there is a nice bittersweet orange peel punch in the finish that cuts through some of the sugary malt. its an interesting mix of grains that contributes this unconventional flavor for the style, and I really like what they've done with this. its not quite as good as their pale red, but its real good for a brewery who is just getting started. nice creamy mouthfeel would lend itself well to a cask engine. just enough carbonation and a certain endearing softness to it. overall an impressive start for these guys.

With its red-ish tone, you'd expect the ale to balance evenly, or maybe a bit to the sweeter side. Dead wrong, this hoppy ale pulls no punches even while delivering a maltier taste to the tongue.

Opening with that beautiful russet mauve hue, Its deep amber body is cast with a heartily diffused haze. A a creamy textured and cream-colored head releases, it simmers on top the ale with longevity and concentric lace- a certainly confident appearance.

As sharp grapefruit, dried orange peels and woody hops leap out at first, the beer's aromas are propped up with firm toffee, cashew and toast. Heavily toasted barley gives the beer a Grape Nuts cereal tone, equipped with a vegetative leafy tone.

Its taste, however, leads with the sweetness as the flavor of caramel and toffee layer upon the tongue. While holding on deep into the middle, a rise of hops is undeniable- pink grapefruit with all its sharp tang, acidity and fruitiness plays out with adjoining citrus peels, lemon verbena, sassafras and woody teas joining forces. Its late bitterness is crisp and broad as the citrusy American hops and a more British wood tone rounds out in finish.

Medium-dry on the palate, the beer's carbonated sweetness allows it to linger deep on the palate before finishing malty-dry and acutely resinous. Its bitter pang invites a light hop-derived astringency and a surprising peppery bite- as if employed by rye.

The clean and malty taste of "amber" allows the complex hop bitterness to take command in true American ale fashion. And I don't mind it a bit, as the hop tilts to the side of balance that ensures crispness, cleanliness and a high rate of refreshment.
