Flying Saucer Pizza Co.

Flying Saucer is a nice complement to the Gulu Gulu Cafe next door, with a really nice selection of drafts and canned beer. They offer 14 taps, all of which feature local beers. Everything on tap when I visited was from Maine or MA: Maine Brewing Mo, Maine Brewing Peeper, Peak Organic Pale Ale, Cisco Island Reserve Double IPA, Slumbrew IPA, Smuttynose IPA, Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet, Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer, Bantam Cider, Slumbrew Flower Envy, Allagash White, Allagash Black, Slumbrew Trekker Tripel, Mystic Day of Doom. Prices were reasonable, with most beers priced at $5 or $5.50 (the exceptions: Mo & Peeper, priced at $6.50 for a full pour, but that's still a great price compared to what I'm used to in Boston, where it's nearly impossible to find even a 12 oz. pour of Mo or Peeper for less than $7).

Like the beer, the pizzas all feature local ingredients, and they serve HUGE slices (1/4 of a large pizza) priced at around $5. I'm a bit of a pizza snob, so I can't say that Flying Saucer impressed me as much as my favorite Boston places (Picco, Area Four, Regina's, Emma's), but it was still very good. Definitely a very solid pizza option.

In addition to the great tap selection, they also have a wide range of beers in cans (no bottles). Can selection included: Greenhead IPA, Newburyport Pale Ale, Newburyport Belgian White, Brooklyn Lager, Sierra Nevada, Sixpoint Resin, Sixpoint Apollo, Oskar Blues Little Yella Pils, Wachusetts Blueberry, and a couple of others.

Not only does this place have the best pizza in Salem with creative custom pies, the beer list highlights the best of New England with all local drafts and cans.

The place is sci-fi themed, so there is awesome Star Wars / Trek wall art and a full sized Locutus of Borg manaquin featured prominently.

I go here all the time and have almost never had a problem with service. The slice of the day is always great, and they have a frequent slice card that I have made ample use of and enjoyed many free, delicious slices.

One of my favorite places - I have litereally no complaints.

Flying Saucer is a sci-fi themed pizza restaurant: they name their food after Star Trek episodes, the TV silently plays either Dr. Who or Futurama, and there's colorful paintings of droids and goblins or whatever the fuck all over the walls.

If you like sci-fi, then this is your place. If you're like me and the entitlement and sexism of geek culture grosses you out, it's still pretty nice. The vibe is more cute than it is oppressively nerdy; it's not like you're stumbling into one of those terrifying conventions these people are always attending.

The pizza goes for a blend between the contemporary "artisanal" pies you find in hip urban enclaves and traditional, east coast thin crust "pizzer." It's really, really tasty, but also really pricey.

As to the beer, the selection is limited compared to Gulu Gulu, but they often hide the best stuff over here. There's between 8-10 continually rotating taps that almost exclusively feature good New England brews, with usually 1-2 desirable rares or one-offs.

Flying Saucer is a pizza place but an offshoot of the Gulu Gulu Cafe which sits next door. The owner of Gulu Gulu owns Flying Saucer. This place serves unique pizza dishes as well as a few taps and bottles. The pizza here is terrific but you can wait a while at times for it to be ready so enjoy a drink or two.

The beer selection is pretty good, not as good as Gulu Gulu but not bad. It's usually run of the mill craft selections: Allagash, Maine Beer Co., Cambridge Brewing, etc. A lot of local breweries here. They have about 15 or so taps with a variety of styles and tastes as well as a cooler for additional cans and bottles. When Gulu Gulu is too crowded, this is a second resort for me. There's a really good, laid back vibe to the place and the people are always friendly.
