This does not look at all like a porter, and I will admit that I was a bit put-off by the appearance. Light brown with copper hints to it. More like a brown ale, or even a mild. No real head to speak of.

Mild chooclate scent, not at all belied by the taste. Very low hop profile. Malts, chocolates, toffee and a bit of a sweet buttery and nutty profile. This carries through to the taste, with a bit more bitterness to it. Sort of like a dark or a bakers chocolate taste to it.

Smooth mouthfeel, but as it warms it feels a little bit too bitter for my liking. Quite a good beer, and after the initial shock of how it looks, I quite enjoyed this.

Bottle to Westvleteren 12 (small) chalice
Best by: August 2012

A: Light tan. 1.5 (mocha) fingernail head on gentle pour. Doesn't look like a porter at all.

S: Vanilla, caramel, semi-sweet chocolate, oak, and fig.

T: Overwhelmingly sweet - vanilla and chocolate that's about it here.

M: Light body with medium carbonation.

O: Doesn't look or drink like a porter. Too sweet for my liking, but pairs decently well with carrot cake as a dessert beer.

Served at cellar temperature from 500ml bottle into straight pint glass.

A) Lightish chestnut brown; very light and clear for a porter. Not promising. Also looks very fizzy.

S) Sweet chocolate, fudge.

T) Chocolate is there, and it is not too sweet, so that's the first hurdle cleared. No way is it a porter; there is a distinct hop bitterness that gives it the balance as opposed to roast malt.

F) Light and fizzy, like a cheaper bottled bitter.

O) This isn't a porter and there are other better chocolate beers, e.g., Youngs. Having said that it is a perfectly pleasant and drinkable beer, there are just better examples that are easily available.

This porter is well balanced with fantastic chocolate notes and a great finish.
