Black, inky body like any other stout. Creamy tan head, like it was spooned on.
Wonderful aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate and espresso bitterness.
The praise ends there. Very sweet with lots of char and wood. Almost overpowering.
A little sluggish in the body.

Thanks to quirkzoo for this 2017 12 oz. bottle that arrived this summer in a fine BIF, but was the last survivor, marooned in the island beer fridge. We’re here to rescue you, Wilson!

The pour drives black, with bare shavings of bubbles floating hither & yon. Nice nose – charred barrel staves, chocolate, just a touch of vanilla. I love the classics.

Mutually Assured Destruction – Barrel Aged 2017 heaps too much ash on the lovely smell. Vanilla hit up front, followed by enough char….well, plenty of char, which allows the ashiness to intrude too much on what smelled like a winner. Sharp green wood, chocolate, with back of the throat sting of alcohol. Creamy.

One of those rare beers that leaves me super excited after one sniff, then dumps me right on my bony ass. A good beer with an elite-level nose.

Sample at the source.
Inky black color with a thin white head that dissipates. Lots of roasty chocolate and bits of caramel and toffee with hints of oak and vanilla. Tasty sipper.

2016 Barrel Aged MAD
Look: poured into a tulip glass, but was ~50% foam
Smell: slight bourbon on the nose
Taste: Sour, obviously infected
Feel: thin bodied

Overall: I have a hard time giving this a good rating because my bottle was infected. I took two sips, and drain poured the rest. If I had a non-infected bottle, I would have rated it around a 3.75.

Pours clear, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is big bourbon, sweet vanilla, and light charred malt. Sweet, heavy bodied with high carbonation. Really enjoyable RIS, even though I think I prefer regular MAD more. Well worth seeking out.

Pours a thin soy-sauce black with a faint trace of head that vanishes immediately. Nice bourbon nose with hint of vanilla. Creamy bourbon-centric taste and feel. Very warming and enjoyable.

This one pours a pretty dark brown, with a small wispy head, and not much lacing.

Smells like caramel, bourbon, oak, and chocolate. It smells nice but it's not super punchy.

The body and flavors here are just too watery. There's no booze flavor present, which is nice, but the thin body just makes this seem overly sweet. The caramel flavors are interesting, but ultimately are just too sweet. There's syrupy milk chocolate, and no roast character. The barrel just makes it sweeter too- the oak is not enough to provide any counterbalance.

This is light and thin, not enough heft to make it interesting. It's got a normal level of carbonation.

This has potential to be a better beer, but right now, it's just missing the mark for me.

On tap at 2 Bros. Pours a pitch black color with very little head. Minimal lacing. The aroma is Bourbon with some char, roasted malts, espresso, and dark chocolate. The taste is woody Bourbon with dark cherry, espresso, roasted malts, and dark fruits. Dark chocolate covered cherries at the end with a Bourbon finish. Small amount of carbonation with a bit of a light mouthfeel. Overall, worth seeking out.

Pours jet black, with a head the color of staining in a macchiatto.

The nose is like a Bourbon Barrel, evoking charred heat.

The taste is smooth, vanilla and barrel, dangerously subdued booze, not too thin nor so thick that it feels sweet or sticky.

The barrel aging took a great beer and made it exceptional. Highest Marks!

2015 release (labeled stamped "Barrel Aged 2014"), poured from a 12oz bottle into a matching Thimble Island snifter glass. Comes out old motor oil brown with a small head of tan bubbles that fade to a ring, minimal lacing but the beer coats the glass. Potent aroma after pouring, lots of bourbon and dark fruit. Taste is sweet at first, maybe a bit too much, some dark fruit and cherry. Definite bourbon and barrel notes in the middle and end, no doubt about the barrel ageing. Finish is lingering, coffee, char, and bourbon. Minimal carbonation, very slick, heavy bodied. This one errs on the side of sweeter, and I think it would be better if it was a little less so and maybe a touch hotter. Well done overall though with a good smack of bourbon throughout.
