Beavers Milk Stout NitroBeavers Milk Stout Nitro
Notes: Our Milk Stout Nitro. This is the first beer we made; we can finally bring you in its original Nitro version to go. No one in San Diego made a Milk Stout so Troy wanted to come out with something unique. Tastes of chocolate and roasted coffee and silky smooth, don't let the color fool you this is an easy drinking style. The mother of our PB stout. Welcome to the Beaver family, good times to you my friend!

Had on tap at the Longfellow Grill. It arrives bright dark brown with a 1/4" light tan foam cap with a very fine bead and excellent retention. It has a rich chocolate and nut aroma with some light roast notes. Hop aromas are low. It is very creamy chocolate and hazel nuts and a few coffee notes. It is moderately sweet with a lightly bitter finish. Nothing harsh or burnt. This is an excellent dessert beer.

Bottle poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours cascading browns to near black with a creamy tan head that settles to a light layer and laces nicely.

S: Roasty, big milk chocolate, a touch of char, earthy, fair t dark fruit, lactose and toffee sweetness.

T: Roasted malt, milk chocolate, a touch of char, earthy, a little vanilla, faint herbal notes and dark fruit, lactose, and toffee sweetness.

M: Medium body, mild carbonation, slightly creamy.

O: Pretty solid milk stout. I'm curious to see how it is without the nitro treatment.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into glass. Stamped bottling date is '11/19/18'.
Black colored body, with brown backlit highlights. Thin, light tan head. No lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, char, slight smoke, vanilla, and milk sweetness.
Taste is full of dark roasted coffee and campfire char, along with milk chocolate and a touch of vanilla.
Mouth feel is thin, with good carbonation. Once the milk chocolate kicks in the beers smooths out, and there is a definite chocolate milk flavor in the aftertaste.
A beer that is split between the initial charred darkness and the later sweeter, milk chocolate. Slightly creamy overall, but the body is a little thin for full and richer enjoyment.

12 oz. bottle:

Pours very dark brown to black with a thin head that is slightly fizzy.

The rich smell is of chocolate, molasses, a bit of roasted coffee and a touch of lactose/milk. Slightly roasty for the style, but still rich and pleasant.

The taste is of chocolate. Sweetness balanced by mild roast more than the typical lactose/sour notes. Still, it has a nice dark malt character that is sweet but balanced enough to be easy to drink.

Could be fuller and could be creamier for a nitro, but it fits the lighter side of medium well enough and does have a pleasant lingering aftertaste.

A milk/sweet stout that is a bit light on the milk and slightly roastier than typical, but still works well. Nice chocolate notes. A nice brew!

Pours like a brown ale. Thin and watery. Smell is burnt coffee, and smoked malts. Almost savory. Taste is similar. Acrid, savory, coffee with a smokey aftertaste. Mouthfeel is watery and flat. I have a feeling this beer was mediocre even before it was further ruined by adding nitrogen. D+

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Clear 14.75-oz. porter/stout tulip
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $1.88 (because of 10 percent off for a variety 6-pack)
Purchased: March 28, 2018
Consumed: March 29, 2018
Reviewed as: Milk / Sweet Stout
Misc.: No bottled on date; Poured a tad too warm

Picked this up with five others at Bine & Vine to get the 10 percent off, and a 6-pack of Firestone Lager. Had seen this many times in stores, but opted not to pick it up for some reason. Thought I had reviewed the basic Beavers Milk Stout, but no proof of that except on Untappd when I wrote on March 24, 2016 that, “Reviewed as 4.11 in Aug. 2013, but seems so much better now. This is awesome.” Anyway, would be reviewing this nitro one from scratch. Bottle description read, “Our Milk Stout Nitro. Poured a pitch black color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy khaki head. Could not see any bubbles underneath head. Very good spotty lacing. Almost perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled black coffee, dark chocolate, char wood, ashtray, cacao, vanilla and caramel malt. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted roasted black coffee, bitter dark chocolate, char wood, cacao, lactose, nutty malts, baker’s chocolate and caramel malt. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, smoky finish. (Feel - 4.25)

This was very solid. Guess I’ll have to go review the original as well. (Overall - 4.00)

Pours a beautiful cascade that creates a creamy tan head, and is completely black. Strong smells of chocolate and coffee. Notes of chocolate, coffee, no bitterness. Some creamy texture but thinner than a typical nitro stout. Overall an exceptional stout, would buy again.

The beer pours out a black color, with a thin chocolate milk colored head------------------- the aromas are of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee------------ the flavors are of sweet milk chocolate and roasted malts, the beer has a creamy full mouthfeel with a super smooth finish----------------- overall this beer was delicious, it's not some mind blowing super thick crazy imperial stout but what it is is a damn tasty milk stout on nitro--

Bottle dated 10/12/17 into a shaker pint with vigorous pour.

L: Pours light black with brown edges and 1 finger of medium density tan head with moderate retention and left no lacing.

S: Nose is mostly one-dimensional semi-sweet chocolate. Wondering if the absence of coffee is due to the age...

T: Taste mostly follows the nose, sweetness is definitely present but not overwhelming. Finishes slightly sweet with minimal bitterness, clears palate quickly.

F: Thin bodied, lower carbonation, slick on the tongue. Almost non-existent creaminess for a nitro milk stout.

O: Wondering if age is limiting the dynamic aspects of this beer. Right now it's OK, but nothing I'd repeat.

Beautiful cascading head, but it’s interupted by chunks of yeast. I should’ve decanted, despite their instructions.

A fairly easy drinker, though a bit heavy on the roasted malt.

A very nice stout, from the Advent calendar 2017. Day 6, I think it was?
The head disappeared immediately but the overall flavor profile was nice. Roasty and almost smoky, with a hint of vanilla and some residual sweetness.

Pours a dark cascading black with a creamy tan head. Smells of chocolate, cream, and roasted malts. Tastes of sweet lactose, cream, light espresso, rich chocolate, and lightly roasted malts. Medium in body with a great nitro carbonation. Overall, a great milk stout, which is saying something because I don't ever really care for milk stouts.

12oz bottle, day 6 of the 2017 Craft BeerAdvent Calendar. I suppose I'll take the label's advice and just dump this sucker straight in!

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with the scantest of amber basal edges, and a nice cascading effervescence effect, eventually rendering two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and yet creamy brown head, which leaves but a low-lying berm of lace around the glass as it slowly evaporates.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, rich cafe-au-lait, a subtle dark orchard fruitiness, vanilla beans, and very plain earthy, weedy, and floral noble hops. The taste is semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, a bit of free-range char, lactose, some oily nuttiness, fading artisanal coffee, medium baker's chocolate, and more weak earthy, floral, and musty hoppiness.

The carbonation is barely there, for obvious reasons, the nitro manifesting a very wan-seeming frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and generally smooth, with a thin airy creaminess pretty much there from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, with a retreating chocolate, milk, and malt sweetness.

Overall - while the opening theatrics are nice, they don't make up for the lack of palate-supporting bubbles in this offering. Tasty enough, I suppose, but it gets kind of cloying after a spell, and it makes me crave an IPA (what doesn't?) or something of the ilk.

Poured from 12oz into Spiegelau Stout Glass. No bottling or freshness date.

L: Opaque black. Half finger of head (Yeah I know small for a Nitro) that is a khaki color and sticks around forever.

S: Chocolate, coffee, cocoa, vanilla and lactose.

T: Nice chocolate and coffee flavors augmented by the lactose.

F: Light, light nitrogenation. Clean finish.

O: Not a huge fan of Milk Stouts but this isn't bad, not particularly great but I would drink this again.
