DATE: August 26, 2017... OCCASION: another beautiful afternoon deserves a beer that says summer... GLASSWARE: Weihenstephan weizen... pours a dense, murky, carbonated lemon-yellow body (that oddly almost matches its label's color)... four fingers of white froth sits thick as wet snow, with pockets of air trapped between the glass and the beer... banana and clove immediately, some noble hops that ping in a metallic remark, buttery biscuit, old vegetable, and sour dough... not the aroma I expected from a brewery at its craft since 1816--more like a draw... the mouthfeel is aided by its bright introduction, a creamy middle, and its hearty, lingering finish--tart, acidic, and reasonably substantial for a weizen... clove, banana, pear, and biscuit serve a fruity meal in and of itself... the earthy, almost dank vegetable couples with dish detergent lemon to counter the initial flavor profile... the result? A beer I find complimentary to the day, but in need of more pronounced, better balanced ingredients... refreshes, stays around, and treats you with a modicum of respect... maybe a victim of expectation? at $2.99 a 500ml bottle, not quite worth the return....

Hazy, light gold appearance with disappearing white cap and moderate lacing.

Light, clean scent of citrusy spice with a touch of banana. Some yeasty bread in the background.

Taste is moderately tart on entry followed by spicy banana and something that feels both floral and citrus, but not too much.

Light-medium texture balanced by carbonation.

Overall it's a pleasant lunch time drink that doesn't overpower the dish.

Cloudy orange with little head that disappears. Rich bready smell. Tastes bready with some fruity esters. Mouthfeel is good, sparkling carbonation with a bloom of taste and alcohol. Overall, this is a hefeweizen a little outside of the usual taste, but it is very good in all respects. A little creamier than other hefeweizens I have had, but well worth trying and I think can be appreciated many times.

From bottle at home. The label has been changed some 5 years ago. Still yellowish but the 'organic' dots have been enlarged.

This is THE first "craft" beer I got hooked on back in 2007 or so. Found it at Whole foods, took 2 home, went back & ordered a case. That lasted me pretty much all summer.

This is a not a "session" beer. It's full, rich, yet refreshing flavor combines with a rich texture that gets you to maybe 2 pints....maybe. Ever hear a beer described as "satisfying"? Here it is. 2 & out.

To this day Pinkus Heffe has it all. Crisp, but not dry. Flavorful with a polite, slight citrus afterglow. It leaves one trying to discern all the different elements of flavor. Adding up to one of the most distinguished, refreshing beverages I've ever had & to date I've noted 650 beers here at Beer Advocate. Weihenstephaner is without a doubt the granddaddy of the Heffes, but there is a distinguished, yet low level spice character here that I really appreciate.

Buy it, chill it, pour it & get ready for a brew that meets all the criteria you hear time & again in the advertising of the herd. There are crisper, less noble heffes out there that are very good, but if you want a beer that leaves you satisfied, this is it.

Note to the Snarky, I do not work for this or any other company & spent over 20 years in the F&B industry, so I know how to enjoy life.

In the top hefe-s, I've noticed the WOW factor comes in the nose and then declines in excellence.
Pinkus' hefe approaches me differently (but I still rate it at the top.)
Pinkus is relatively undistinguished in the nose (I really like more banana), but makes up for it in a taste that is not too fruity, as the style is prone to taste like and, surprisingly, keeps that high level as wheat mouthfeel usually goes thin.
If you find it, buy it. I hope to again next summer.

MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave this hefe- 2.5 stars of 4 and said "It is a rather northern-tasting Weizen, though it is has a thoroughly southern ratio of 60% wheat."

From a bottle.
Cloudy yellow gold body topped by a large creamy white head.
Aroma+ earthy hops
Flavor is more balanced, mild, and only slightly bitter.
