really neat beer, something quite different for a porter. sure the alcohol is huge, but there is a lot going on in here. the yeast is neat, usually when porters are yeast driven, or at least have a flavorful yeast, its an english one, predictable anyway. not here, this is a vastly different yeast, or at least it presents itself as very different with everything else going on. some red to the color, not as black as expected for a big porter, super heady though, explodes like soda, almost too much, but i am always intrigued by beers that look this alive. it has a real nuttiness in there with the doughy yeast, almond or walnut or something, earthy and flat, but sturdy and neat with all the malt happening. not quite as black and bitter and roasty as anticipated, it borrows some from the big brown ales and even dubbels and quads of the world, layered and dark, but not that far on the spectrum of roast. it comes together well, alcohol is a bit much for the lighter body and all these bubbles, but its real flavorful beer that should do well if it finds a permanent home in the united states. i liked this one a little better than some of their other offerings i got to try.

Beer that has all the necessary characteristics of the style. Like a good classic beer. But it is missing those braves that make a beer a great product. The beer is fine but it stays half way

Bottle bought in Belgium recently, marked best before July or August 2017, so I guess I'm OK. Pours a coffee-like -- in other words, not the thickest looking -- black that looks just a bit cola brown when the stream thins out at the end of the bottle. Not a big head but a nice rim of toffee foam, replenished by what little strings of bubbles. Coffee, toffee, brown sugar, root beer, some cherry smells. Tastes of chocolate, roasted almonds, caramel, a bit of espresso and licorice, and again a hint of red fruit, but on the whole still much more brown-sugar sweetness than anything else. Feels full in the mouth, a bit of carbonation for cleansing, less booze slickness than I was geared up to expect.

Pours black with a massive growing head that decided it needed to launch itself out of the bottle upon being opened.
Nose shows liquorice and roasted malt along with a phenolic note and some chocolate.
Flavours include more dry roasted malt and liquorice sweetness along with soft booze and a herbal/phenolic character again.
Insanely overcarbonated.

330 ml bottle into snifter, best before 11/11/2020. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, licorice, raisin, cherry, date, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, light smoke/herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, char, molasses, licorice, raisin, cherry, date, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, light smoke/char, dark fruit, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Mildly warming alcohol for 9.4%. Overall this is an excellent English style imperial porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Not overly roasty/charred. Very rich malt complexity; restrained fruity yeast and balancing English earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.
