Hazy dark amber, small off-white beige quick to some frothy lacing.
Lots of peat on the nose, backed by whisky and nice wood notes. Subtle, but rich malty sweetness too, mildly fruity, faint toffee and caramel. But mostly peat.
Peat seems to try and dominate the taste from the start, but the sweetness smothers it up quickly, same thing goes with the almost numbing (for a moment) whisky alcohol. Tho big, the malty sweetness isn't bland, but with rich toffee and some nice fruity notes to go along, mostly cherry, bit of raisin, peach, light apricot and overripe orange. Bits of candi sugar, lots of caramel, especially towards the finish. The fruity notes are replaced by something surprisingly nice in the finish: a rich toasted oak note, hinting a dust of cocoa powder, some nice vanilla bean and an overall intense woody flavor, impregnated with some recurring peat. Great warm scotch finish, really dry, but incredibly not too boozy (big points here!).
Aftertaste is dusty, with toasted wood, caramel, faint peat scotch, nut peel, not really much. Medium body, medium carbonation. The tasty sweetness might fool you to drink this faster, but it's still 15.1 abv, so better to pace yourself.
Another great surprise from White Pony, i was really skeptical of these rather cheap barrel aged beers. This nice rich BA barleywine brings a soft bearable peatiness, greatly handled alcohol and especially great oak.
