Toasty, roasty and decidedly coffee-like, the brewing team of 18th Street turn to the English for inspiration for balance. If the heavy cream character of milk stout helps, then the addition of savory vanilla should be a godsend.

Hunter Vanilla is an ominously dark ale with a mocha dark lather. Roasted grains resonate to the nose along with dark chocolates, coffee and sweet cream. Its taste is lavishly roasted but balanced with toffee, sorghum and the scorch of roasted marshmallow.

As the middle palate develops, the sweetness slowly lifts and the char sets in. Espresso, bittersweet chocolate, roasting walnuts, burnt toast and carbonized sugars continue to intensify into a deep campfire whimsy. But the balance of sweet cream and vanilla brings a dessert-like counterpart to the roast. Bitter with broad and woodsy hops, the bite seems coffee and cocoa-like rather than the resinous taste of lupulin.

Full-bodied, strong and savory, the imperial stout lives up to its lofty aspirations as the alcohol simmers on the late palate like kaluha. Hints of charred fruits carry a currant and grape-like sherry note while the ale trails into a long aftertaste of coffee and cream.

Pours a strong dark brown head with good retention. Body is bold and deep black.

Nose is full of roasty goodness: coffee tones and a touch of red grapes from the roasted barley; bitter and semi-sweet chocolate are a blend of aromas from the cacao nibs and the malt; vanilla beans are a subtle but nice complement.

Extremely roasty on the palate, which is quite a shock. Dry and bitter, with the focus on the malt and yeast presentation. Burnt toast, red grapes, black coffee, cherries, and cream. Lip-smacking chocolate and vanilla on the finish.

Thick, smooth, and creamy. Nearly chewy, but it somehow doesn't come across as a high ABV stout.

A very tasty stout, this is definitely true to the English style (vice a big sweet American stout). That's definitely a surprise with most AIS adjunct stouts being much sweeter and far less roasty (or at the very least representing different flavors through the barley and yeast selection), but after the surprise wears off, it's very nice, indeed.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Blue Session. Aroma has sweetened coffee, cacao and dark malts. Taste is bitter with coffee and toasted malts, a bit astringent on the finish.
