EBF Last Saturday Dark black with an off white head that shows great retention. Rich roast and chocolate aroma and flavor with a bit of sweetness. Cherry could really be a bit more forward.

I have enjoyed all the variants of Hunter that I've had the chance to try (BBA, vanilla, coconut) but sometimes I feel they could be more forward on the stated adjunct. Either way they work for me, because I love the Hunter base. Well see how this one goes. Pouring from a 16 oz. can into a pint glass this beer pours out pitch black and forms an amazingly dense pinky worth of dark caramel colored crown. The smell is sweet, roasty & chocolately with a slight cherry tartness smell to it. I always love Hunter because of how huge it is for a milk stout. Even the smell is huge for one. The taste comes in with slight cherry mixing through the chocolate sweetness. The cherries are really balanced, which is a good thing. In most stouts with cherries I've had it seems to be too cloying. Either way too sweet or too tart for the stout. In this one the cherry is just slightly tangling with a great milk stout base. Wildly creamy, even for a milk stout, with a dry, warm finish.

Appearance: This is a bottle from a trade a while back so might be upwards of two years old; I say that as it was a slow gusher - of course, the flip side is that the head was huge and the lacing was copious; the liquid was the expected fudge brown color

Smell: Black cherry dominates; milk chocolate underneath

Taste: Black cherry flavors dominate the taste buds, too; the milk chocolate emerges in the middle and there is a touch of tartness in the finish; mostly sweet, however

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; overcarbonated

Overall: This might have been a bit better when fresher and I know lactose can be volatile so I should have consumed this earlier; still, the flavor profile was maintained, even if the carbonation was a bit much; fun to drink for the first glass but after a while the sweetness became too much

Thanks, FlandersNed, for the opportunity

Pours an effervescent ebony with 2 fingers of caramel colored head. Pretty average lacing, head retention is even less impressive

S: Some raisin, a little iron, a little ghost booze

T: Raisin, a little dark cherry, a little cocoa & dryness up front. More cocoa, cherry, a little raisin & fig as this warms, some leafy hop as well. Finishes a little dry, some vanilla, a little cherry, some chocolate & fig

MF: Fairly chewy, subtle carbonation

This seems to have less lactic acid than the other 2 I tried. Not bad, not sure any of these have really won over as a fanatic follower

Tan head. Black in color.

Very similar to the other hunters but the cherry shows a bit more. Lots of roasted malts. Sweet cherries. Not tart.

Okay. Nothing special.

Cherry flavor is mild but the beer as a whole is yummy. It is a slight improvement over the base beer.

Got this one from claaark13 a while back. Cheers!
Vertical Series 03-08

APPEARANCE: Pours a murky opaque black and yields a 2+ finger, thicker, creamy tan head with very good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Head fades to a splotchy wisp and leaves touches of lacing on the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving touches of lacing on the glass as it empties. Definitely blacker than expected for the ABV and a quality head on top of it. Good looking.

SMELL: Cherry aromas, light cocoa powder, a bit of a metallic quality and a weird spent yeast aromas as well. If you’ve smelt a batch after primary fermentation is done, you’ll know what I mean. A little off and definitely milder than hoped.

TASTE: Cherry and some cocoa notes up front. Lots of flavor and much more forthcoming than the nose had suggested. Lots of flavor after the swallow with more cherry, cacao, roasted bitter coffee, roasted malts and sweet cream notes. Very nice and the milder cherry component works well with the base beer.

PALATE: Medium body and lower levels of carbonation. Creamy and slick on the palate, goes down silky smooth and finishes sticky. Some bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: This was really good. The nose was underwhelming and had an odd yeast quality to it that didn’t sit well with me, but the rest of the experience was great. Much better than I’d expected, actually. A flavorful, enjoyable, well-measured, lower ABV adjunct stout with a solid look and feel to support it. Thanks again for the beers dude. Give this one a chance if you see it. Cheers!

I am really disappointed in the hunter series this year. At $18 a pop, I expected to get fire in a bottle. I had this on tap at the brewery and it was awesome. The bottle just fell really flat. No balance and the cherry is not coming through.

Very dark pour with little to no head. Very light cherry notes to the smell. The taste is subtle in almost all respects. No strong notes pervade. The cherry is apparent but not on the front of the draw. I thought it would be a heavy drink but was surprised to find that it was extremely light for such a dark beer. Although I gave this beer a 4 for overall, I think I may have understated my like for this beer. I truly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone. My favorite beer is the Pairie Bomb, and I would say that this beer holds its own in this category!
