Servied In a pint glass has a nice coffee color almost white head. Light lace on the glass. The smell is of malts and hops, as you would expect in an IPA. The mouth feel is creamy smooth light sweet bitter after. The over all taste is malt pine and dark fruit. The hop bitter is great with a nice hop finish. Found this place because I could smell the grain brewing, had to be a brewery close, and it was right across the street.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with slight light transmission and a fine, two finger khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, citrus and lightly piney hops, a hint of coffee, mixed citrus. Flavor is dark toasted malt, piney and citrus hops, pine needles, orange, lemon and grapefruit. Bitterness is subdued at first, but finishes with good, lingering alpha oil pine and a hint of coffee. Medium bodied with light creaminess. The malt body of this Cascadian ale is very nice with a great toastiness and touch of char. The hopping is somewhat mellow and underwhelming at first, but really kicks in and lingers after the finish. Not as aggressively hopped as many in the Northwest, but makes up for that in a fine balance and flavorful malt. Not sure why there are such low marks for this, hopefully due to style unfamiliarity. This is one of my favorite styles and is sadly uncommon. If this was available here, I'd be glad to see it again.

On tap at the brewpub in Solana Beach. Dark brown in the tall tulip with a very nice off-white foam. Malty with a touch of sweetness, but ah, the hops. This is more evidence that as much as people breed and experiment with hops, it's hard to improve on Cascades. Brewer also includes Simcoe and rates the IBUs at 76.
Rich and malty with a big flowery nose. Fruity but sharpened up with a nice tang of hops. Malt flavor makes me think of an oatmeal stout. A warm taste of orange peel with that fresh, fragrant hoppy zing.
This is more of a Brown IPA than black, but it's yet another interesting variation on this sub-style. Foam lasts nicely, with fine carbonation. A highly drinkable hoppy brew I'm glad to have tried.
