Very flavorful, robust porter. Poured from a 16 oz. can purchased at the brewery, poured into a tulip glass. Creamy thick initial head atop a dark brown body, good lacing. Smell of berries and dark chocolate. Pleasant dark coffee flavors when tasted. Something I would get again.

Reviewed from notes taken in Fall 2014.

Porter. 6.3% ABV.

Served on-draught into a conical pint at Pinthouse Pizza, Austin, TX.

HEAD: 2 fingers worth of head, pale khaki in colour. Nice creaminess and frothiness. Smooth, full, robust. Leaves light lacing on the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is nice - ~3-4 minutes.

BODY: Opaque black in colour. No yeast/lees or hop sediment can be seen within.

Looks good albeit conventional for a porter. Not unique or special within the style, but certainly appealing.

AROMA: Creamy notes, dark malts, specialty chocolate malts, a kiss of roasted barley, oats.

Appealing for a porter, with a seemingly great balance judging by the aroma. Pleasant overall, and of average aromatic intensity.

TASTE: Cream, dark malts, dark chocolate, specialty chocolate malts, bitter cocoa powder, brewer's chocolate, oats, and a bit of lactose sugar.

It's a bit too bitter for a porter, actually, suffering from an unpleasant lingering bitter aftertaste that borders on acrid. A bit more malty sweetness would help balance this out. It's well-built otherwise.

Has a pretty high flavour intensity for a mere porter, but flavour depth and duration are average.

I do like it, but it's not amongst the most balanced, complex, or subtle expressions of the style out there. More a solid mainstay that will cater to the casual porter drinker, but not as classic in execution as Fuller's, Black Butte, or the like.

TEXTURE: Chewy, creamy, smooth, wet, full-bodied, thick, and heavy. They nailed the mouthfeel down pat; this is well within porter style conventions. The chewiness in particular is a highlight. Really a meal in a glass, as well it should be. True to style, it's unrefreshing but its smoothness and wetness keeps it nonetheless approachable.

The one downside is it's slightly astringent. Not otherwise problematic (not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, scratchy, etc.).

OVERALL: Downable and enjoyable enough, but not a world-class porter by any stretch. I wouldn't get it again with Deschutes' superior Black Butte Porter sitting on shelves for far less per oz, but I'm glad I tried it. A nice little porter from what is possibly the most underrated brewery in Austin.
