Pinthouse Pizza "Bearded Cereal"
on tap at the Burnet Road location, Austin TX 5 NOV 2015

Notes: I believe this is their standard "Bearded Seal Dry Irish Stout" made with Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Served via Firkin; I'm not sure if it's actually cask conditioned. Listed at 6.1% ABV

Appearance: Typical opaque brown-black body beneath a foamy head of light tan. Excellent head retention but... no lacing? Odd.

Aroma: Sweet cinnamon and mild roastiness. Welcoming.

Flavor: The cinnamon comes through in flavor clearly, as well as something else that appears to be coming from the cereal. Is it just sugar? Is it the cereal itself? When is the cereal added? It's unusual. It finishes dry, mildly roasty, and bitter but with some residual sweetish-cinnamon (which, again, is a little odd).

Mouthfeel: Light bodied. Smooth.

Overall: Although I initially liked it, the unusual note (that I can only assume is coming from the cereal) cut into its drinkability about halfway through. It was no longer a dry stout that had an interesting cinnamon edge to it, but more of a cinnamon cereal 'thing' that happened to be in a dry stout. And that's not to say that it was too strong, or that it left the beer unbalanced, just that whatever the odd note was it became too distracting. I wouldn't have it again but I'm sure others will love it.
