Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance- The brew is served a nearly pitch-black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of a roasted malt and coffee smell mixed with aromas of cocoa and a light nuttiness. Along with these aromas comes some light notes of a caramel and some toast.
Taste – The taste begins with a nice roasty and toasty malt mixed with flavors of coffee and chocolate. Up front there are also flavors of a light nuttiness as well as some caramel and molasses. As the taste advances the sweeter flavors fade a bit all while the roastiness and the nut get stronger. Toward the end, the coffee surges, leaving one with a slightly bitter, but very nice and roasty taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is one the slightly chewy and creamy side with a carbonation level that is medium. For the style and the nature of the brew the feel is great, making for a nice easy drinker.
Overall – A rather nice dry Irish stout with a good coffee and nice roasty taste.

On tap at Pinthouse Pizza- Burnet St in Austin, TX.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small white head and lots of lacing.

This smells like roasted malt, lactose, and dark chocolate.

This is a fairly simple and straightforward dry stout, but it’s done well. The body is nice for the style, with a good dry roasted character, some bitter hops, slight creamy lactose, and just a hint of wispy smoke.

This is lighter bodied, but crisp and clean and creamy, with a dry finish.

This is no frills and very tasty.

Only an average beer in my opinion, but not offensive. Their other brews will be more exciting to the craft beer drinker. Here is a detailed description from Pinthouse Pizza website: "Bearded Seal is a stronger, bolder version of traditional Dry Irish Stout, however not quite an Imperial Stout. Whereas other Dry Irish Stouts come in at less than 5% ABV, Bearded Seal comes in at 6.1% ABV., capturing the intensity of a higher ABV beer yet remaining drinkable and complex.

Pleasant herbal character shines through from the generous hop addition playing off the rich coffee and chocolate notes. The flavor of this beer begins roasty and intense and then finishes soft and clean with a refreshingly smooth dry finish."
