Pours deep brown to black in color with a fizzy tan colored head that dissipates quickly. Looks relatively thin for a beer of this style. Finished with very nice lacings.

The immediate aroma is of oak, red wine, booze, figs and other dried dark fruits. Followed by a nostril lashing of sweet caramel malts.

The flavor is rich and roasted in the front, opening up to a middle full of milk chocolate and coffee. Finishes strong of roasted malts again and slightly bitter. it tastes good, but it lacks the body and depth you would want from a russian imperial stout, especially one that is barrel aged.

For a Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout, it is relatively small and thin, and the flavor profile is small and lacking. At $11.99 for a 16 oz bottle.... I expected this to be a much bigger, badder version of what it is. It's a good beer, but I wouldn't pay that much for it again even if they decided to sell it in a bomber sized bottle. Basically, if a brewery is going to sell their barrel aged product in some kind of elitist 16.09 oz bottle, it had better have twice the balls this one does.

Norm, you are the man for hooking me up with this brew ive never heard of before. Poured into a snifter, the brew is black in color with a big tan cap of froth.

This smells of toasted coconut, dark fruity tang like raisons, vanilla, caramel and tannic raw oak that flirts with harshness but the rest of nose character mellows it out.

The taste has bourbony tang, vanilla, caramel, oak, roasty earthen coffee and chocolate. What a mix of character that all works together is enjoyable harmony.

This is medium to fuller bodied with moderate carbonation. It is creamy and has almost a tangy bourbon thing going on that im not too terribly keen about but shit this is good.

This BA Stout will stand up to any whales out there. Perfect blend of malt and wood, with a touch of bourbon that stays with you for an hour. Smells of bourbon as well

Aroma is mainly boozy alcohol and some vanilla. I really don't smell anything else.

Kind of tastes the same. Very sweet. Vanilla and some bourbon. More heat than flavor though. I didn't get any stout flavors until the very back end and through the aftertaste. It is mainly dark chocolate and marshmallow. Like a Smore without the graham cracker. Very, very weak though. No coffee to be found.

The carbonation seems very high. By far the most I have felt in a stout, let alone a barrel aged one. It did not show in the pour though, which makes me wonder if it is more of an infection/bad bottle.

Regardless, I was very disappointed. I know I am definitely in the minority here, but my brothers both felt the exact same way. We didn't even finish the bottle between the 3 of us. We all found it to be very muted flavors and the crisp/sparkling aspect was hard to overlook.

Really good barrel aged stout that is a great beer, but expectations are so high within this style (and when paying $10/10 ounces) that I'm not incredibly impressed. Very tasty, no alcohol burn for such a high ABV beer, the carbonation is fantastic, and the coffee and chocolate flavors pair nicely with the bourbon flavors. Only weaknesses are not quite enough complexity from the bourbon (in this area it's quite underwhelming compared to, say, KBS) and a tad thicker body would be better. Overall, definitely worth trying if you can find it and afford it.

Poured thick and dark with a thick tan head. Smell is bourbon, oak, dark roasted malts. Taste follows with the addition of some dark chocolate notes. The bourbon is really well balanced. Nice creamy mouth feel.

16.9 ounce bottle, no date on it that I could find but I believe it's from a recent release a couple months or so ago. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch or so tan head that lingered around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. I like the aroma, it smells like bourbon, wood, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some dark fruit noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth, and easy to drink. Moderate carbonation. I liked this brew, definitely worth picking up if you come across some! $11.99 a bottle.

Review is from the first batch in 2015. Edit is from batch two in 2016.

Look - Oily black body with a tan head. The head is a mixture of thin and thick bubbles. It settles quickly with little lacing.

Smell - Bread. Bourbon. Chocolate. Oak. Sweet. A little maple. Vanilla.

Taste - Smooth. Coffee. Chocolate. Bourbon. Slightly bitter finish.

Edit - Raisin.

Feel - More carbonation than other high alcohol barrel aged beers. Full bodied.

Overall - I can't really go wrong with BBA Axis Mundi. Take a few dollars off and release it every month, I'd buy it by the case.

Big dark, thick, good legs (not great), and a decent carbonation for 10% +

A lot of vanilla, oak, chocolate, and strong sugars.

Very sweet, a lot of floral notes and hops. Still the beer is chocolate forward with a lot of bourbon character. I'd be interested to see this one with some age. Sadly this isn't an easy to get beer so we'll see if there are others around later.

Mouth feel is good, not overly thick or creamy but well carbonated. Good stuff.

Sure a 12.6 oz pour at nearly a dollar an oz is pretty bad, but I'd still seek one out if you're in the mood,. It's very good for the style and while far too expensive next to the best of the best, small brewery and well I was able to get a bottle unless the comically cheap bourbon county stout.

Aroma is bourbon, oak, tar, roast malt, vanilla deliciousness. Flavor reveals more bourbon, with charred undertones and dark fruit in the finish. There's a peppery flavor in the aftertaste., along with vanilla.

On tap at Madtree tap room, poured into snifter.

Pours black with a thick dark khaki head.
On the nose you get tons of vanilla, oak, espresso, and some mild chocolate.
Bourbon notes are very strong throughout.
The taste is very similar, loads of creamy vanilla on the front of the tongue.
Mid palate you get roasted espresso, turning into bitter chocolate in the back.
Thick full bodied mouthfeel, zero alcohol burn.
This is a very solid barrel aged stout. If your a fan of the style, this will not let you down.

poured about 16oz into snifter from a growler.

A - Dark obsidian with brown highlights around the edge of the glass. Big foamy 2.5 finger head and some of the most beautiful lacing I have seen from a stout. I mean it just coats the glass after I drink it. A thick cap remains for the duration of the session.

S - Mellow bourbon, bitter dark chocolate, rich caramel, vanilla, marshmallow, milk chocolate, earthy hops and some wood.

T - It is quite bitter with a smooth and nice bourbon presence. Plenty of dark bitter chocolate, caramel, vanilla, marshmallow, milk chocolate, earthy hops and some wood.

M - Medium-bodied, silky, perfect carbonation, not very thick but still smooth.

O - This is quite good and the carbonation is about as perfect as any BA stout ever made. Big thank you to Harold for shipping a 32oz growler to me. It was a real pleasure to drink.
