Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Raspberries and chocolate go together like two peas in a pod. But don't worry, there's no peas in the Rubus Cacao. Rather the sweet chocolate, roasty bitterness and dark raspberry fruit combine in perfect harmony. Who knows, the Rubus might even become the pea in your pod!

Canned 1/5/2016 enjoyed 2/15/2016 in a Madtree belgian

Look - Thick medium bubbled head. Head is tan. Body is lighter, see through brown at edges. Settles to a ring. Little lacing.

Smell - Light chocolate. Raspberry. Sweet. Malt.

Taste - Very watery Big Luscious. Light chocolate. Light raspberry. Almost a brown ale with light chocolate and fruit. Bubblegum.

Feel - Light feel. No alcohol at all. Watery.

Overall - Big Luscious Light. It isn't that I don't like it, just want more out of it. Just as I remembered on tap a year ago.

I really liked this. Not a big Stout guy, but it's cold out and the fella at the Growler Stop gave this glowing reviews. The chocolate and raspberry is very apparent, but not overdone. Smooth and very good. By comparison I recently had a Rhinegeist Panther (a brewer I really like) and I'd take this one all day over that beer.

Enjoyed from the the growler via Jungle Jim's in a snifter. This nice stout pours a rich black with a nice head of light tan foam that settles to a thick ring, soapy layer, and spotty lacing. Nose of sweet chocolate and raspberry puree...one dimensional, but those dimensions are excellent. Flavors exceed the nose with rich raspberry and mild semi sweet chocolate awash in sweet cream and dusted with confectioners sugar. Medium notes of roast and char present themselves on the sides and back with a lightly bitter roasted malt note on the aftertaste. Medium mouth feel, slick and quaffable, medium body that is coating. A sizable brew that is the equal of the sum of it's parts. A chocolate covered cherry that substituted a raspberry with cream. A fine finishing brew.

If you are a one trick pony and do that trick very well there should be no complaints. I have none.

Cheers

12 ounce can, canned on 02/12/2016. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about an inch frothy tan head that stayed around for a little while. There's also a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like milk and bittersweet chocolate, raspberries, and roasted malt. I think the taste is just like the aroma, it's all chocolate, raspberry and roasted malt. There's a lot of sweet and bitter flavor that works really well together, neither one overpowers the other. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked it, definitely worth picking up if you like fruited stouts. $2.59 for a single can.

Growler poured into a pint glass. Poured about three fingers of head that took nearly a full minute before leaving copious amounts of lacing. Aroma is highly cocoa, with a pleasant tint of raspberry. Taste followed as you would expect from the aroma: chocolate w/berry aftertaste and a slight warming alcoholic note (whether intentional or not, I found myself tasting Graeter's black raspberry chocolate ice cream). It almost reminded me of a thinner milk stout. An excellent beer from an up-and-coming Cincinnati brewery. I don't know if Rubus Cacao has been canned/bottled by Madtree, but they should continue producing this stout-lover's favorite.

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a snifter

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of mocha head that leaves virtually no lacing.

There is plenty raspberry in the smell. I also get some chocolate.

It starts out with a lot of raspberry flavor. Semi sweet chocolate comes through a little in the beginning but is more perceptible on the tail end and in the finish leaving a slightly bitter chocolate aftertaste.

It seems thin for a porter or stout.

It has a good balance between the raspberry and chocolate. Neither one dominates the beer, and yet both are easily detectable.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a finger high tan head that died down, leaving a narrow collar around the edge of the glass and lots of lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of raspberries are present in the nose.
T: As in the smell, the taste has flavors of raspberries along with notes of chocolate malts and some hints of roasted malts and bitterness. The roasted malts become a little stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The taste of this beer has a very good balance between flavors of raspberries and roasted chocolatey malts. It's not too heavy on the palate so it is rather easy to drink.
